I have been working at The Carolina Inn

    Pros

The Inn looks out for your best interests. If you want to change jobs within the hotel (which I did) go right ahead...it is perfect for students trying to find the right fit.

    Cons

Hard to "move up" in the hospitality industry, and increase salary.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep encouraging!

    Pros

The Carolina Inn. If you can be successful there, you can be successful anywhere.

    Cons

Communication between departments was difficult because at times the hotel was so understaffed that many employees were asked to wear many metaphorical hats.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management, recognize that you're hourly employees are your best resource. They are the base of your pyramid and without them management would not exist. In the future it's my hope that management will learn to bring out the best in people, focus on what each employee brings to the table and not on an employees faults.

I worked at The Carolina Inn full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Fun, energetic work staff in lower levels (kitchen, restaurant, etc.)
Frequent job openings (... more of a con due to high turnover)

    Cons

Following the Destination corporate takeover, the inn drastically transformed in terms of employee relations. High management turnover leads to even higher employee turnover, both of which probably stem from corporate's undervaluing and underpaying employees. Even those who have been with the company for over a decade see no upside in said loyalty. Poor health benefits. HR not there to help employees, but rather aim solely to keep corporate executives happy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look into reorganizing priorities. Employee morale is good for day-to-day operations, keeping your business running smoothly.

    Pros

    Cons

No upward mobility, upper management unsympathetic to guest services staff

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Staff appreciation days don't improve morale as much as treating employees with respect
