I have been working at The Dennis Group full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Work can be very diverse, you work with all the disciplines under one roof, and they encourage you to go on site. The atmosphere is very friendly and employees recieve performance bonuses at the end of the year. Throw a killer Christmas party!

    Cons

Steep learning curve since the industry is so specialized. Some initial training but mostly project experience is your teacher.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find a more efficient way of training. Otherwise, keep doing what you're doing!

I worked at The Dennis Group full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Much experience can be gained in a short time.
There's always a lot of work to do.
You can take on as much responsibility as you dare.
    Travel.
Non-pay benefits and perks used to be good.

    Cons

Long hours in the office and the field, with lots of travel to nowhere exciting
    Unrealistic deadlines
Low pay, but there's the performance bonus (ha, see below)
Favoritism and politics rule the culture and the bonus structure
40hrs a week is considered "part-time" in the culture.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management wouldn't listen to advice anyway, but if they did, I would tell them:
Reign in the junior partners and their ego's.
Establish some level of overtime pay, or automatic bonus, especially for those in the field.
Look objectively at an employees entire body of work, from multiple sources, not just the opinion of a lap dog engineer or project manager looking to up their bonus by putting others down.

    Pros

Always something new to learn, something new to do. Timelines are such that you will never be bored at this company.

    Cons

Very little mentorship and development. Little time for development and much pressure on end results of schedule within budget.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Field employees are regularly challenged by office staff and those that can retreat back to the office. Recommend more consideration be given to those employees, especially in the face of negative feedback - both from clients and colleagues. Things are not ever black and white and not as they might seem.

I have been working at The Dennis Group full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    -Friendly coworkers
-Laid back, flat management structure has its obvious benefits
    -Not too much red tape
-Good place to get experience out of school
    -Interesting work

    Cons

-Absolutely no management whatsoever, projects are poorly planned, under budgeted, and under staffed.
-No room for advancement, annual reviews / raises don't exist.
-The flat structure leaves many new engineers in the dark
-Most people are spread thin across multiple projects, work environment favors heavy travel and OT
-High employee turnover, expect the average college graduate to wok here for 1-1.5 years.
-No flex time or comp time, job benefits are weak.
-6 Year vesting period for 401K
-Company doesn't pay for your parking, which amounts to $16.50 per month. You'd think for an office of 100 people, the company could shell out $20K per year and pay for its employee park...nope.
-The office is located in a bad area of Springfield, cars get broken into, damaged, etc.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This is no longer a 6 person company...stop acting like a small family business and start acting like a corporation.

New college grads would stick around for more than 18 months if they were properly mentored, trained, and managed. A flat structure doesn't work as the company continues to grow. Hire competent Project Managers, just because someone has worked there for 15 years doesn't mean they are qualified to manage others. When six employees quit within 3 months of each other, you know its not a coincident, it speaks upon layers and layers of management issues within the company. Start acting like a company, the partners and junior partners act like spoiled brats.

I worked at The Dennis Group full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Interesting field of work being in food processing plants around the country, overall very intriguing work but is overshadowed by poor management that protect knowledge as if engineering is some sort of witchcraft. Unwilling to teach and promote.

    Cons

50 hours a week for a year and got less than 5 dollars an hour for the 10+ hours of over time each week what they call a (performance bonus). When fired they insulted me by saying that a "veteran and a collage graduate should be more." More of what you'll have to ask them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work on developing a better environment and employ people that are willing to teach and mentor, because this never happened with me and many other current employees.

I have been working at The Dennis Group full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    1. Heavy performance-based compensation component
    2. Wonderful colleagues
    3. Very collaborative - very open culture fosters team-work and sense of 'belonging'
    4. Dynamic -
    5. Ability to define your own career path / job function

    Cons

    1. Not enough management / 'hands off' approach often leads to team members being left in the dark
    2. Work culture favors overtime, heavy travel, and personal sacrifice

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1. More proactive approach to project management
    2. A flat management structure has definate drawbacks as the company grows
    3. Young engineers learn best when closely mentored - some react well to 'sink or swim' approach, but others do not, irrespective of potential or talent level.

I have been working at The Dennis Group full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

The laid back approach and flat structure of the company are what make it an enjoyable place to work. The company is constantly hiring new people with varying levels of expertise, hosting "lunch and learns" and offering opportunities to learn new things. Being able to travel, gaining management experience, and learning the field from the ground up should be on any engineer's bucket list, especially those fresh out of school.

    Cons

Projects can be poorly managed, the project managers are usually partners or junior partners of the company meaning they have partial ownership in the company. Personally, if I were a PM, I'd be more on top of my projects. Expect no management, long hours in the field, no comp time and no overtime. Little to no advancement opportunities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The partners and junior partners of this company need to offer more guidance and training for the newer, less experienced engineers. Partners and junior partners should be more disciplined about acting like owners and not children.

    Pros

The people are the real asset. Great for entry level looking for experience. If you are looking for travel and no structure.

    Cons

A lack of management. There is no structure. No set goals or objectives. Low pay. They use the end of year bonuses as an excuse for their low pay. You will work ridiculous hours in the field with no compensation or comp-time. Annual reviews are unheard of; you have to demand a review and a raise.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Act like a company. Your partners and junior partners act like spoiled children

I have been working at The Dennis Group full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

The people you work with every day, If it was not for their professionalism, projects would fail miserably. This is the culture; not the partners or jr. partners.

A lot of freedom and no micro management; the culture

    Cons

Very demanding work and unrealistic hours when in the field. Projects are not well managed and planned. Project Managers need to be more on top of the projects from inception to closure.

They talk about the culture, but ask them what they really mean.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Instead of focusing more on their end-of -the-year bonuses, get more involved in making sure every aspect of the project is being met and the right amount of resources have been assigned.
