I have been working at The Dominion full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The office was close to home and made for a short commute. Other than that can't say much about the place.

    Cons

The management is top heavy. The company has underperformed the competitors in the same sector year after year. Attribute the poor performance to leadership.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The owners of the company should clean house at the upper management level.

I worked at The Dominion full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Worked happily at The Dominion of Canada for 7 years, in two departments under five managers. It was close to home and my first "real" job after university. I made several life long friends during my tenure there. Some managers were excellent.

    Cons

When a new manager was assigned to my unit the morale of the entire team went down hill. This person was known to be terse, abrasive and have unreasonable expectations. I'm not sure how he was promoted to a manager within the company, as all of the other managers had excellent people skills and knew how to motivate people and bring out the best in their staff. The "new" manager had people in tears that I'd never seen cry in 7 years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When a unit has high turnover and morale is clearly very, very low, take action. The way this manager interacted with his team had a very literal affect on the mental health of several members of his team. I've never seen so many people at their desks in tears, and I hope I never do again.

I worked at The Dominion full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Working in a customer service area of IT the end users were extremely patient and the best users I have ever dealt with.

    Cons

The IT management is out to lunch! From the CIO down it is a mess. Micromanaged from the top down. An example when a CIO has to sign a PO for a $5 dollar mouse, that is just ridiculous. Working conditions were terrible and never remedied. You would think a billion dollar company could afford to paint the walls.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't run parallel systems without increasing support staff. When you start hearing complaints from the user community act on them.

I have been working at The Dominion full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The staff in the branch across the country work very hard and their reputation in the industry with the brokers is excellent.

    Cons

Technology has fallen behind the competition and the they are to top heavy in management in Head Office. Those at the top need to trust and enable the people that work below them thus enabling them to do their job. Senior management is to involved in the daily operations.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Trust the staff you have hired and allow them to do the job they were hired to do. Don't be afraid to admit when you have made a mistake.
