I worked at The Douglas Stewart Company full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good benefits package, generally good working atmosphere, new-found sense of company profitability that was sadly lacking, culture shift in the right direction. Many caring employees. Finally cleaned house of some dead weight including CFO. Long overdue accountability actually happening.

    Cons

Sales dept is a revolving door due to poor sales management skills and worse communication. How can you make a quota when your territory changes 3 times a year? Last area of weakness still needing to be addressed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reinvigorate sales dept. Keep upgrading talent, and retain key employees.

    Pros

Flexible work/home schedule. Ability to work at home when necessary.
    Some opportunity for advancement.
Some great people. The team as a whole works very hard to achieve results.

    Cons

Lack of strong executive management leadership. Lack of clear direction.
Salary and benefits aren't very weak when compared to similar positions in other local companies.
Many employees covering multiple roles due to lack of resources.
No replacement of positions when people leave.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide a clear business plan with direction. Find ways to better recognize hard work.Create a better management structure. Make decisions and be willing to take risks.

It feels good to clean house...

I have been working at The Douglas Stewart Company full-time

    Pros

Good benefit package, flexible and understanding management, finally a strong, well educated, and experienced executive staff is in place and are cleaning house. Employees that were not pulling their own weight or those who somehow BS'd there way into a job have now been let go, raising the morale of the hard working, caring employees. DSC is now working much more efficiently and in the end that will benefit all.

    Cons

Older, drab building. There are no career ladders in place.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep going executive staff. Keep making the hard but right decisions. Keep cleaning house. There is still a little more work to do in that department.

    Pros

People are very down-to-earth, friendly, hard-working, and committed to the success of the company. You are challenged on a daily basis to problem solve. You learn something new every day. Flexible and family-friendly.

    Cons

Too much conflict at the management level. Some managers lead with too much ego and need to strive to present leadership that inspires their teams.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Even though it is necessary to challenge and debate each other, strive to present a "united front" to your employees so that we can support the company vision. Do a better job of defining and communicating the company objectives so that your hard-working and committed employees can support them for you.

Family-Oriented Environment Makes You Want to Stay Here

I have been working at The Douglas Stewart Company

    Pros

Family-owned, small company. The people are great. The owner wants to be a good employer and treat employees fairly. Layoffs are the last resort, always tries to re-purpose employees who aren't performing well in their current positions. In earlier years, a generous bonus package for managers as well as employees. Company is solid.

    Cons

Executive Management struggles with making decisions. Action is slow. Change is nearly non-existent. Executive Staff is constantly at odds with each other. Executive Staff often micro-manages things that should be delegated to department managers/employees but remains hands-off with things that should really be pushed through at an executive level.

Lots of talk of things with little or no action.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Not everything has to be debated. Make a vision, and then make a plan to get there. Concern yourself with the future of your employees and their career development. You have created an environment where many long-term employees have a dead-end career and have no where to advance. You will lose them.

I have been working at The Douglas Stewart Company

    Pros

    Good work/life balance
    Job stability
Good, passionate coworkers and fun, cool products
    Industry leader

    Cons

Not all divisions within the company are held to the same standard which hurts overall efficiency.
There is no integrity in the sales numbers which makes it a challenge as a sales people to truly know how we are doing at a any given point in time.
    Based in Madison

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give your sales people more autonomy to make on the spot decisions that will be beneficial for not only DSC, but our customers as well. We are woefully behind our competitors on how we conduct our day to day business
