Consultant, consult thyself!

Communications Consultant (Current Employee)

I have been working at The Fifth Business full-time

ProsGood exposure to clients in the energy sector; diverse group of people to work with.

ConsIt is an Internal Communications and Change Agency with no internal communications strategy of its own; very poor change management within the company; extremely centralised and ad hoc decision making by employers (all decisions must be made by a board of 3 directors); little or no career progression or systems in place for this; bank holidays are not given but have to be taken from employee holiday allowance.

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed more transparency in the company and an internal communications strategy.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend

I have been working at The Fifth Business full-time for more than a year

ProsCompensation is okay, not great; some good clients, but not much variety;

ConsPoor, inexperienced local management; very little management support and lack of new opportunities for consultants; little interaction with other consultants; too much time sitting around waiting for another assignment; not much opportunity for growth

Advice to Senior ManagementSenior management should have significant change management and communications experience

Avoid if you can

Communications Consultant (Former Employee)
Houston, TX

I worked at The Fifth Business

ProsThey offer a very competitive salary, but usually this is too good to be true.

ConsIt is a communications consulting firm, but in reality, a staffing agency that hires full- time staff to do freelance work. Half of the time you are sitting in the office waiting for projects to be given to you. Inexperienced management that never shares any information with employees and always over promises. They have no ability to get new businesses but to set up trap for employees to fall in so they can find solid excuses to let go staff without paying any severance package. If you really need a contract job through a staffing agency, go for Kelly Services and some others. They are much more reputable and reliable!

Advice to Senior ManagementIt is an insult for employees that people who have no communications experience and skills are leading the Houston office.
