I worked at The First Church of Christ, Scientist as an intern for less than a year

I have been working at The First Church of Christ, Scientist full-time

    Pros

Free books (uncorrected proofs) courtesy of The Christian Science Monitor.

    Cons

Where to begin? The organization seems to constantly be shifting its priorities and, as a consequence, there is a lot of personnel reorganization. It's definitely not a stable work environment.

I worked at The First Church of Christ, Scientist full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great time off benefits, something like 17 paid days off in addition to vacation days. Severance benefits are very nice, since as a church the company is not obliged to give any.

    Cons

Not eligible for unemployment in the case of a lay off. Some management decisions lack transparency. Way too many meetings, too little done in them. Large decisions (in the publishing house side) seems to be made by people who aren't experts in the Publishing field.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Incentivize the reduction of in-person meetings, to reduce man-hour costs.

I have been working at The First Church of Christ, Scientist

    Pros

The attitudes of people there is really great. Excellent benefits and competitive salaries. The Church itself promotes good ideas, and leadership tries to promote a very positive atmosphere most of the time.

    Cons

The installed leadership are usually fine people to work with, but there's a lot of politics in the management level. And when management finally decides to include the workers in the communication clear reasoning is not always obvious, and communications within departments about major changes are shared when it is about to be implemented. If changes are shared ahead of time there is often an already a pre-designed plan for how things will happen, so imput is not necessarily even needed, nor wanted.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate more. Learn to empathize with those who work under you. Decisions should be shared sooner — more democratic leadership and processes would server everyone better.

I have been working at The First Church of Christ, Scientist

    Pros

Very friendly environment. Generous time off. Good benefits. Nice location. Many different industries under one roof.

    Cons

Not many experts in their field of work. Especially managers seem to be appointed depending on who they know and if they are a member or not rather than by skill level.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire managers experts from outside The Church who have significant experience in their field. Being a member should not be a criteria for managers.
