I have been working at The Gap full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

This is an iconic brand with a great benefits package. Employees have access to solid career training and development programs. A very nice employee cafeteria is available at all locations. The company also has a very generous employee discount.

    Cons

The work environment has become highlight political. Lack of work/life balance. I've never seen such high levels of employee turnover, especially people who are leaving without another job. This has placed a lot of pressure on existing employees to pick up workload. The company generally pays below market levels.

    I worked at The Gap

    Pros

Friendly environment. Close knit group with similar goals and standards. Found it easy to mix into an existing staff.

    Cons

Little direction given and almost no time to execute the high level of standards held in the company while at a lower volume store.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take your time when hiring. Don't just throw any and every person who comes into the store directly to the sales floor. It's not the place for everyone.

I have been working at The Gap part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Amazing discount: 50% off full priced items at Gap and Banana Republic, 10% off sale
25% off Old Navy, 30% off at Outlet
Many opportunities in the company, ability to transfer to another store or sister brand, fast pace, great learning experience for something trying to build a retail career
    Supports lots of charities

    Cons

Leaders are not always willing to help associates advance, its extremely hard to go from the field to corporate. People that are not qualified for their job are still in place. The company sets out unrealistic goals with limited payroll.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow for more opportunities for employees in the field to advance quicker into corporate. Leaders need to be held accountable for lack of communication. Corporate needs to listen to field advice.

I worked at The Gap part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Worked at a busy location, never really that bored
    Great employee discount of 50%
    Good benefits - RAVE points!

    Cons

    Tedious closing requirements
Crazy customers (for any retail job)
micro managers (based on this location)
GAP CARD! GAP CARD! GAP CARD!....every single day

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

trust employees with their duties, stop trying to get a raise by blaming it on employees, the more you push gap card the less people want to sell it, we needed more motivation (i.e. comission).
