    Pros

Lots of smart people here, important work being done

    Cons

few career advancement options for staff who are not academic employees. not clear what the next step is for staff since only postdocs and graduate students have a clear career path

I have been working at The Gladstone Institutes full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Academic research environment with institution-wide support and insulation from university system issues. Meaningful research focus. Impressive and caring leadership. Amazing people.

    Cons

Pay is lower than industry, as you might expect, but better than universities. Can't think of anything else really.

I have been working at The Gladstone Institutes full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The level of science is truly exceptional. The environment is very collaborative. Open floor plan for each institute which makes it easy to get to know everyone working there, and to collaborate with anyone that can help you.

    Cons

The institute takes themselves a bit too serious. They believe that everyone works there is excellent, and that they are the best place to work ever. At the end of the day it really depends on your PI and the lab that one works in how your work experience is going to be. Like everywhere, there are good labs and bad labs.

I have been working at The Gladstone Institutes full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I like the people, and senior management. We have good benefits. I work with amazing and talented people. I like that our mission is to help humankind. I have been here for almost 15 years, and most of that 15 years has been a great experience.

    Cons

Could be more fair and consistent with salaries. I know they think they are, and I know they try to make them fair and consistent, but ….. And some of the scientists are ego-centric.

    Advice to Management

Be more engaged with your people at all levels.

    Pros

The Gladstone is a friendly, supportive environment, and the research tends to be very high impact.

    Cons

It's hard living on a postdoc's salary in expensive SF.

I have been working at The Gladstone Institutes full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I started my Gladstone life as a postdoc trainee. There are many training programs to improve your capability for your next-step career, for both academic and industrial directions. Many training programs are free for Gladstone trainees. Gladstone also has very good scientific environment to inspire you and good research cores to support your projects. Salary is also a little higher than university.

    Cons

San Francisco has very good whether, but research pressure keep you in the lab most of time, although it totally depends on what you really pursue for your career.

    Pros

Very collegial and smart people - values of integrity, teamwork and excellence show. Great benefits.

    Cons

Expense of living in SF makes it difficult for trainees.

    Advice to Management

Need more gender diversity in upper management.

    Pros

Flexible schedule, freedom to pursue own scientific interests and questions, access to UCSF resources and contacts, nice facilities, good vacation and benefits

    Cons

Relatively low pay, not much room for growth or changing roles, each lab varies a lot, awkward culture, lots of focus on the post docs and graduate students, without as much attention paid to research associates who are also in the midst of developing their careers.

    Advice to Management

Many of the cons at Gladstone are not a Gladstone-specific problem, but rather an industry-wide issue. A bit more focus on professional and career growth for RAs would be nice.
