I worked at The Hartford full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Solid position in the market, good products, good people that work for HIG.

    Cons

Leadership lacking big time. Way too many layers (generals) who protect themselves simply for their own bonuses. Leaders manage the message to senior levels to protect their own jobs and do not reward the folks adequately that drive the actual results. You cannot challenge leadership or you will be perceived negative forever and get stuck in the ranks persay. Buddy buddy system is who gets promoted and therefore unless you kiss butt and self promote your work, it will be very difficult to advance into leader roles. Ironically, people that know how to lead vs manage probably reside in the middle layers but they are leaving so they get career advancement. HIG needs to invest in the development of the good people that are driving outcomes and stop pretending to have the answers at leader level. Some folks were promoted to leader levels that really lack "leadership" skills to change the culture of thinking. Senior levels need to start holding AVP and vp levels accountable for results and look in mirror of what they are getting from those high paid roles vs the middle management level. Then again, if the message is controlled but those Vp's the message never gets to the senior folks. Really needs to be solved as that is key to employee engagement and retention of key folks, start to create a culture of trust instead of the direct opposite.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look in mirror and hold your vp levels accountable for results before they get paid plush bonuses. be aware of the lack of coaching and true development going on.
