I have been working at The Henry Ford full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Flex time - You have flexible start time in most salaried position. Most salaried employees arrive in the office between 9 - 9:30am.

Dediction to Organization - Most person work here because

    Cons

Pay - Most people just pay less than what they are worthy, unless you are an executive. They get paid the big bucks.

Career Advancement - There aren't very many opportunities for advancement. Most moves within the organization are lateral (i.e. from one department from to another). Once you make it to middle management, there isn't anywhere you can go. The Senior Management Team is made up on employees that have worked for THF for as many as 15 years and don't have plans to leave anytime soon. There is very little diversity in Senior Management (i.e. one Indian director, no African-Americans).

Culture - The morale at the company is pretty low at this time. Most salaried employees are unhappy. There has been a slow migration in the focus of the organization from the stated mission to making a dollar. Also, I hear that there was a negative shift in culture when the current President was hired.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management isn't really concerned about what the true issues are. I would suggest that they really need to address the issues (pay, career advancement, etc.) to recruit and maintain the best talent.

I worked at The Henry Ford part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The atmosphere, the work, and the people are all reasons to work there. You really get the sense that the museum and village are run by a group a highly intelligent, caring people, who wish to preserve history and educate both the employees and the visitors.

    Cons

Part-time historic presenters only make minimum wage. It is a great job for a student or retiree looking for a very enjoyable 3-4 day work week.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I know you're running a non-profit, but the employees would certainly appreciate a raise in pay.

Incredible resources, disconnected at the very top, not much room for growth.

I have been working at The Henry Ford

    Pros

Some of the nation's greatest collection and cultural gems. A good place to develop resume for a few years due to brand name and resources. Exceptionally committed and dedicated staff. Financially very sound.

    Cons

Directors and top management have been in their roles average 15 years. No room to move up and advance career. A marketing driven and focused organization. Staff complaints include lack of career development and training, no substantive salary adjustments in 6 years, disconnect of top management with mid management and staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Open up review process of executives to mid name and staff. Develop real management and staff training program. Get serious on salary management and talent management. Balance strategic goals to not just be about marketing

I have been working at The Henry Ford

    Pros

Like a big family, great work life balance, free passes to museum and Village, managers are encouraging and understanding, a very accepting and warm environment

    Cons

In some positions, it is hard to get a raise or get enough hours, even if you've been there for years. Also, benefits can be hard to come by.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reward employees for hard work, not just a great attitude. Sometimes the management can be too lax, and some employees need to be disciplined more often.

I worked at The Henry Ford

    Pros

really great environment, ie the museum and the village, free entry for yourself and extra tickets for family and friends.

    Cons

they rely on the fact you are working for a non profit organisation as an excuse to pay minimum wage, there are people working at the museum and village with vast historical knowledge and expertise in their field. But yet only worth the minimum financial respect.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

get real, these people deserve more respect, they are the face of the whole business
