    Pros

Great pay for amount hours worked.

    Cons

Supervisor would flirt with every female. Absolutely no consideration of your personal life. Some people had gotten punished for missing a day because of their high school graduation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay attention to who you put in charge.

    Pros

    Freedom, piece of cake position

    Cons

Managers/management that are under the thumb of private equity. As you can gather by the starting pay of field reps, if you are at/near the end of your career, desperate, or starting out this is for you. The usual rhetoric over the company wants your ideas, you to succeed, growth, on and on...but with politically correct management above you, and private equity pulling the purse strings you go nowhere as a rep.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The Rolling Stones song "Under my thumb" is appropriate.

    Pros

pay is decent, catered lunches on a fairly regular basis, overtime so always opportunity for extra money

    Cons

don't seem to care about developing current employees to be the leaders for tomorrow

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

promote from within!!!! Have a lead promoted to supervisor when that supervisor leaves, if the lead isn't qualified to be a supervisor he probably never should have been the supervisors right hand man.

    Pros

Very nice clean facility. Management takes pride in making sure working environment is updated and resources are available to get the job done. They did not mind spending money. They also had great training resources and they made a valid attempt to develop their employees. Not always successful but they did try.

    Cons

CUT THROAT!!! Watch your back!!! Good ole boy network. Management did not like their authority questioned. Not consistent in how they treated or compensated employees. Employees given raises that they did not earn. No diversity in upper or middle management. Shop employees low pay and hard worked.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

UPPER AND MIDDLE MANAGEMENT DIVERSITY NEEDED

    Pros

They are very friendly great opportunities, solid products.

    Cons

If you sell a new store you have to stay in the position till end of quarter after store is installed to get commission.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If someone sells a new store they should get paid regardless if they stay through end of quarter or not in that role.

    Pros

Friendly group of people. Job security without the need to perform. No work ethic required.

    Cons

Stagnant wages. Disenchanted workforce. Ineffective middle management. Turns a blind eye to poor performers and takes advantage of the others. Upper management more concerned with politics and the good old boy network than the concerns of it's hourly employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Open your eyes and get a clue. Set some performance standards and weed out the bottom feeders. A happy, solid workforce is a productive workforce.

I have been working at The Hillman Group full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great position for someone who wants independence, flexibility, and the ability to make decisions regarding assigned retailers. Management in the field is very good. The accounts are excellent. There are good relationships established between Hillman and the majority of their customers. The product is high quality so you can sell with confidence.

    Cons

Territory's change regularly so its difficult to be accurately evaluated on results. Increasingly frequent turnover in the field causes significant issues with work/life balance for those covering open territories. Frequent use of temp workers to cover these vacancies.

The company has discontinued company cars for those in the field. Expect to put at least 25,000 to 40,000 miles on your vehicle annually.

THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO MANAGEMENT IN THE FIELD AS THEY CONTINUE TO DRIVE COMPANY CARS.

The company does NOT pay mileage. Instead there is a monthly stipend and a fleet card for gas. This is a good deal for the company and a terrible one for those in the field. The stipend barely covers maintenance costs incurred due to the amount of miles being driven. The employees are the ones who take the hit on the significant depreciation of their cars.

Turnover in Customer Service & IT very high. There is a continual loop of new people and a soon as they become knowledgeable they leave. This creates significant issues with field operations. IT and anything related to IT is a decade behind. In the past 2 months I have been "on hold" for as long as 30 minutes attempting to resolve an issue at a retailer. Unable to stay "on hold" any longer I have ended the call and had to return another day to resolve the issue. When it was brought to the attention of management we were told to be patient as IT had a lot going on........... well the field has a lot going on too. Penalized for missing deadlines even when its due to IT issues.

The timeliness and accuracy of planograms and directions on projects, resets and maintenance of product is sketchy. A planogram has been promised for a primary retailer for over a year and still no planogram. This causes an excessive amount of hours being spent on trying to figure out what is needed. If this could be done correctly it would save tens of thousand of dollars in payroll. It's Retail 101 to have easy to read, detailed and accurate planograms.

The pay is hourly for this position when the industry standard is salary. Expect to make 40% less than other Sales/Service positions. A 1 hour commute is the standard before paid time starts. Driving up to 2 hours per day non paid is ridiculous.

There are so many good things about working for Hillman. If the aspects noted above would make you miserable then this is not an employer where you would thrive.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Company cars are an industry standard. Eliminating that program shows that the company does not value the very people who service their customers. Beef up IT and all of the programs that the field uses.
