I have been working at The Houstonian Hotel Club and Spa full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The pay is great and they offer excellent benefits. The managers work with your schedule especially if you're in school. My coworkers are absolutely amazing and make working there so great. It is a great company to work for if you are looking for a company to grow with, most of the employees have been there 5-30 years.

    Cons

MANAGEMENT, MANAGEMENT, MANAGEMENT, I cannot say it enough! There is so much politics involved with management that it is insane. A lot of times being able to get things done for yourself depends on wether or not your manager likes you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Leave the politics and your personal lives at home!

I worked at The Houstonian Hotel Club and Spa part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Great people to work with! I worked at the club and the hours were decent for hospitality business. I was always off at 10 since they closed at 10. Managers were great to work with. Compensation was great, especially if you spend a good amount of time working there. I was there for ~100 days and I got two raises.

    Cons

Members can be a little demanding at times. But there were also good members who I miss.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management needs to get to know staff.

    Pros

Great place to work at. Good benefits, friendly people, comfortable environment.

    Cons

Not too flexible with hours, life revolves around this company. Feel like you have no free time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Think about how people also need to have there own life outside of the workplace. Be a little more flexible.

Great starting employment for students, but not a place to stay long term.

I have been working at The Houstonian Hotel Club and Spa full-time

    Pros

They are very flexible and like to work with college students. You are also able to gain experience by changing departments or campuses (hotel, club, spa). Great benefits within the hotel, club, and spa.

    Cons

There is no place for real advancement. It can be a highly stressful job with crazy hours and the pay is not bad but not so great either.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Managers, directors, and supervisors should also be required to take training courses as all other employees do. Also, a little appreciation can go a long way.

I have been working at The Houstonian Hotel Club and Spa full-time

    Pros

    Good benefits, some cool people

    Cons

Extended employment in the club can make one lose their sense of self. You must speak to everyone from 'script' as my manager called it. Forced to work holidays with little to no flexibility. Must perform back breaking labor while gossiping management looks down at you. Advice to new hires; if you ever have a problem don't think management will help you. They are extremely trigger happy; 22% turnover, probably all terminations. Instead of fix any problems they'd rather just fire everyone involved.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

do some real management and get to the staff that upholds the club

I have been working at The Houstonian Hotel Club and Spa full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Working tat the Houstonian provides the opportunity to interact with professionals from all walks of life and from all parts of the world. Members and guests of the club are among the leaders of the city, state, and nation. Management fosters respect of the individual at all levels with a great emphasis on customer service.

    Cons

Opportunities for advancement at the club are limited due to the small size and single location of the club. Management is brought in from from external companies so there is little room for internal staff to move up.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide incentive and opportunity for career advancement through school stipends, educational opportunities, and industry trade show attendance.

I have been working at The Houstonian Hotel Club and Spa

    Pros

    -Benefits
    -Nice front line employees
-Flexible work schedule, good for students
-Ability to mover around (not up) in the company)

    Cons

-Managers do not communicate with front line employees...they barely say hello to you
-Managers do not support employees...they expect you to take care of everything (I might as well be the manager!!)
-There is not enough employee recognition...many employees have been there for over 20 years with nothing important to show for it except a paycheck

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More substantial employee recognition especially for those who have been with the company for 20 + years.
Be genuinely nice. Do not pretend because you think I'm just a "kid"
Support your employees, if they ask you for something it's because they need your, not their own.
