Very toxic environment that feeds off of constant, needless drama

I worked at The Jones Group full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great stepping stone! Learn what you can, take advantage and/or initiate any possible opportunities to own a special project for recognition and to build your resume, then run like hell!

    Cons

Lots of bullying from upper management in a toxic and outright unprofessional atmosphere wear swearing, breaking pencils, pounding on desks and slamming doors is the new norm. Everyone is under massive amounts of constant stress to get an impossible amount of work done. Deadlines almost always compete and no mater what you choose to tackle first, you chose wrong. Supervisors/Directors can almost never agree on any one thing which results in religiously contradicting directions from the multiple supervisors you have and leaves the innocent "work horse" to decide which suit to follow and which to upset. No one is approachable and the nicest of people will gladly stab you in the back the moment you turn around to avoid admitting a mistake. Everything is a fire to put out - management does not know or care how to lead others, they are only concerned on how quickly they can unload their deadlines and messy confusion onto their many "nameless" associates. Not a healthy environment for anyone who values work/life balance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Not everything can be a fire! Management should talk- not scream- amongst themselves first (that is what you get paid for) on what tasks and projects are worthy of marking "urgent" before handing over to associates who will inevitably disappoint. If you set your team up to fail = they will do just that! Unless you want your associates to work until midnight every night, they need more clarity and direction on what is right for the business without the unnecessary fires, drama and needless distractions.

    Pros

Fairly decent benefits. Good place to learn a little before you can move on to your dream company that requires some years of experience before you apply.

    Cons

Working at Jones right now or interviewing you will hear that the company is in the middle of a "transition", which they have been saying to justify the lower salary they will offer. You do not move up easily in the company, no matter how much of an "asset" you might be to your specific team. Jones is a place to build up skill and go, like younger people do, or settle in a mediocre environment, like the remaining group from the "old jones" when it was all good.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When you have good employees, pay them well and treat them well. The bottom of the food chain is the actual power source, not the top. Without good employees there is no good work.

I have been working at The Jones Group full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Good discount, generous benefits, generally relaxed atmosphere in Marketing Dept

    Cons

Departments are very disconnected. Brands do not function as teams and as such you can expect to take direction from some one in another office you might have never even met in person. Ever since the buyout (by Sycamore) the company has made so many shifts and transitions. No telling where you or your brand will end up. Unsettling and impossible to have a positive outlook towards the future.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more transparent with changing company directives.

I worked at The Jones Group

    Pros

Found it to be a creative environment -- everyone had a lot of inspiration and ideas, and were tied closely into the fashion industry.

    Cons

So many of the employees had been there for a long time, could have stifled new thinking.

I worked at The Jones Group full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    Good benefits
    Laid back work environment
Lots of paid time off even for the low level positions, at least at the corporate office
The tend to hirer management from within but there is a low percentage limit in which your salary can increase, even with the promotion
    Lots of office parties
Offer various business related training courses in things including Microsoft Office
Good for a first job right out of college to get some real world office experience and then move on

    Cons

    Pay is very low
Turnover is very high, due to the low pay
You will not have the highest level of intelligence among your co-workers, again, due to the low pay

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay your employees more if you want to lower the very high turnover. During my last week, when I let the accounts that I worked with know that I was leaving, I had multiple accounts say something relatively close to "you have been great at your job, so I knew you would be leaving the company pretty soon." When your customers have those sorts of opinions of most of your employees, it is a pretty bad sign of the way your company is run.

    Pros

Flexible schedule, friendly staff in store

    Cons

Many upper level managers are really micro managers. Company will repeatedly let people go due to down sizing and restructuring only to hire more people to fill those openings weeks later. The product selection in soft lines over the past couple of years has driven loyal customers away.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Just bring in good product and the people will come. Store trying to reinvent the wheel of classic dressing,
