I have been working at The North West Company

ProsLots of openings, so if you are proactive you may be able to move up.

ConsSerious trouble with treatment of employees leading to low morale. All about squeezing every last cent out of their customer.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop burying your heads in the sand about the issues. Acknowledge them and work towards fixing them.

A once great company now controlled by greed and dishonesty

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Winnipeg, MB (Canada)

I worked at The North West Company full-time for more than 10 years

ProsGym for employees
Healthy food in cafeteria
Dental plan is free
Chance to work with various charities through company

ConsExpect employees to put in unreasonable amounts of unpaid overtime
Sketchy location with no security in building or parking lots
Senior level staff who only worry about their bonus, see employees as dollar signs, not people; mislead staff with false promises and operate without honesty
Weak HR who work to protect company

Advice to Senior ManagementYou have moved away from what it means to be an NWC employee, serving the North. Get rid of the outsiders at the senior level and start valuing the experience already in the building. Learn to be honest.

Worst Employer Ever

Supervisor (Former Employee)

I worked at The North West Company full-time for more than a year

ProsCan't think of any pros for this company except perhaps working for them gives you the opportunity to experience the north.

ConsNot a good company to work for. Employees are treated like something you scrape off your shoe. Their idea of "occasional overtime" is working 12 to 16 hours a day 7 days a week. The accommodations they provide for their management employees is substandard, no opportunity for advancement, and no appreciation for a job well done.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat your employees better. Give recognition where and when it is due. Make surprise visits to your stores so that you can see how things really are instead of how the local management wants you to see them. When an upset employee calls your head office with concerns, treat that employee with dignity and respect instead of belittling their concerns. Learn how to keep complaints confidential instead of sharing all details with the local management. Remember that your employees in isolated communities are stranded there and still have to live with local management so make an effort not to make bad situations worse.

Once in a lifetime experience

Store Manager (Former Employee)

I worked at The North West Company full-time for more than 5 years

ProsEvery day a new experience. Opportunity to immerse yourself in a different culture. Live and play in a wilderness environment.

ConsAs non-resident managers you are expected to work extremely long hours (55-70 hrs/wk and more) and never receive a thank you from H.O... Due to the long hours you rarely have time to enjoy your surroundings. Only one paid trip out per year. The turnover in H.O. the last several years has been so dramatic that there is a large disconnect between H.O. and the stores. Due to the locations of the stores (remote) local politics is always a concern and can mean a transfer or termination with no notice (H.O. will never back the managers in a dispute) with the Bands.. Many of the stores and staff houses are very old and in need of much repair and can make your work and home life very trying to say the least. Pay is not worth the conditions you must work and live in and getting a raise above the annual inflation rate is near impossible regardless of your work quality. Because of very low productivity and skill levels from most of the local employees margins are very high making it difficult for local residents to afford quality products. H.O. Is more concerned with their corporate Image and shareholders profits than actually making any real changes.
If you are looking to experience Northern Canada work for The North West Company. If you want a career, stay in the South. FYI the reality is there is almost a 40% chance you will quit within the first year..........you have been warned.

Advice to Senior ManagementShow appreciation for your long term hard working employees instead of terminating or transfering due to internal and external politics. Insure a work/life balance is a reality and not just lip service. Pay your non-resident employees a wage that reflects the difficulties of living in a remote location. Get rid of your "yes men" in upper management . Work harder at actually reducing margins instead of the usual smoke and mirror routine.

Northern Store Manager in remote and semi-remote locations

Store Manager (Current Employee)
Thompson, MB (Canada)

I have been working at The North West Company full-time for more than 5 years

ProsHousing, subsidized food, health benefits and bonus potential. Adventure and working with a diversed employee culture. Challenging work that can lead to further opportunities with in the company.

ConsNot always a balanced work/life ratio as managers end up covering other employees shifts. Difficult to hire, train and retain employees in some of the remote communities as they have no desire to learn or work.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat all managers equally. Listen to their concerns regarding their store and the community they serve
