I worked at The Ohio State University full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great training, rich resources and great employee benefits University wide. OSU also has great manager-mentors, and very dedicated, knowledgeable, caring, and hard working faculty and staff. The students were also fantastic. I was very pleased and proud to work for OSU overall.

    Cons

Opportunities for professional development are mostly in Columbus. One must always drive to Columbus. This proved problematic for me, as it took a lot of time to get there. Working on a smaller campus was a great experience. However, there are no advancement opportunities at the smaller campuses. If one wants to advance, it is necessary to go to Columbus.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer more virtual, teleconferenced training opportunities and events between the smaller campuses and Columbus to students, faculty, and staff at the smaller campuses so that all can take part and more easily participate in the OSU community. All of the campuses have much to contribute to one another.

I worked at The Ohio State University full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

OSU has an excellent benefits package. More sick leave than most people will ever use, vacation time separate from sick leave, great insurance, free tuition if you want to take classes.

    Cons

Upper management often changes policies on its own accord without consulting with the people doing the work. This seems to be a university-wide phenomenon and not a unique problem for any particular college or department.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get the opinions of the people on the front lines before you make decisions that affect them.

I have been working at The Ohio State University part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Amazing location and opportunities are plentiful. Plenty of opportunities for student involvement and participation in leadership.

    Cons

Undergraduate students working for the University are deemed to not have any valuable input for leadership. It is very difficult to get support for new ideas without the backing of many higher-ups.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give undergrads more freedom for ideas. They can help improve University Housing if you give them the opportunity for real input.

    Pros

Working for OSU will certainly provide you with job security and opportunities to develop. The benefits are very good and retirement is a major incentive if you can make a career out of it here.

    Cons

Bureaucracy is a roadblock to innovation and change. The University is very large and silos certainly exist. Inconsistent application of policies across the campus.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

University needs to make a genuine effort to centralize HR services.
