I have been working at The Ottawa Hospital full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Wide variety of specializations practiced here

    Cons

Nurse Mangers who can work part time hours because of their dumping work on asst. managers/educators and charge nurses etc.
Intimidation and promises of promotions used to control inner circle.
Particularly bad in critical care areas (larger ones) easy for manager to hide behind staff and intimidate/bully them into doing the work.
Staff and resource cuts are used to justify increased workloads/poor moral - easier for poor management to hide

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look at departments that are experiencing high level of turnaround, that need to pull from other areas consistently just to meet basic staff numbers
Clean up your nurse mangers - you can not expect your front line nurses to give their all when they see mangers that get away with coming in at 9:00 leaving at 15:00 and doing so on the backs of their staff

I worked at The Ottawa Hospital full-time

    Pros

Many departments and three campuses available so you have many options, depending on your skill set, to choose from. Benefits are decent.

    Cons

The place as a whole is very political and many cliques are formed. As opposed to the private sector, there are no perks that enable one to balance out work-life problems. Compensation is lower than the private sector for jobs unrelated to Nursing and Medicine: IT, Human Resource, etc. There is a sense that they are still living in the past in regards to innovative ways of creating a healthy work environment and using technology at it's fullest.

    Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at The Ottawa Hospital part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Everyone can agree with the most important company value: treat patients like loved ones
Very good paid training for every aspect of your job
Meetings with supervisor are scheduled often and in a very relaxed atmosphere

    Cons

Very long time before getting offered part-time (as opposed to casual on-call) work
    Out-dated equipment
Work either in very hot or very cold environment

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Install air-exchangers in the dishroom please
Don't be stingy with raises, we work hard

I worked at The Ottawa Hospital full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Salary was competitive, actually above average. For permanent employees, the benefits package is outstanding. Paid overtime and 4 weeks vacation. Some great people.

    Cons

    Some not so great people.
Employees not promoted based on merit. Can only move up if a more senior position becomes available, and then you must compete for it.
    Lack of support from management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Some big changes are in the works. Things may sort themselves out.

    Pros

    love the multi culture environment.

    Cons

promotion is not possible due to unfair competition, do not go for interview unless you know someone is willing to back you up , i should say..." this position was already filled before even your interview" I hate this place for this practice.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

No reasons to provide them advice. They should know better.

I worked at The Ottawa Hospital full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - some really great people to work with.
    - one of the most advanced healthcare institutions in the area with the most money to spend.
    - seeing the faces of staff when improvements make their job much easier and saves them time.

    Cons

    - parking is limited. took 1 year to get a parking spot, then became a ~ 70 deduction per month.
    - too many things going on in IT and lack of communication between groups within the department.
    - some of the "long term" employees feel to comfortable and set in their ways to become innovative and explore new possibilities.

    - recent healthcare cutbacks could have huge impact on the services.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate better between groups, and get the longer term employees that are set in their ways, to lift a little more weight, or let some new keen staff to move in and make needed changes.
