I have been working at The Ottawa Hospital part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Everyone can agree with the most important company value: treat patients like loved ones
Very good paid training for every aspect of your job
Meetings with supervisor are scheduled often and in a very relaxed atmosphere

    Cons

Very long time before getting offered part-time (as opposed to casual on-call) work
    Out-dated equipment
Work either in very hot or very cold environment

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Install air-exchangers in the dishroom please
Don't be stingy with raises, we work hard

I worked at The Ottawa Hospital full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Salary was competitive, actually above average. For permanent employees, the benefits package is outstanding. Paid overtime and 4 weeks vacation. Some great people.

    Cons

    Some not so great people.
Employees not promoted based on merit. Can only move up if a more senior position becomes available, and then you must compete for it.
    Lack of support from management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Some big changes are in the works. Things may sort themselves out.

I worked at The Ottawa Hospital full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    - some really great people to work with.
    - one of the most advanced healthcare institutions in the area with the most money to spend.
    - seeing the faces of staff when improvements make their job much easier and saves them time.

    Cons

    - parking is limited. took 1 year to get a parking spot, then became a ~ 70 deduction per month.
    - too many things going on in IT and lack of communication between groups within the department.
    - some of the "long term" employees feel to comfortable and set in their ways to become innovative and explore new possibilities.

    - recent healthcare cutbacks could have huge impact on the services.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate better between groups, and get the longer term employees that are set in their ways, to lift a little more weight, or let some new keen staff to move in and make needed changes.

I worked at The Ottawa Hospital full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Great experience and hands on training in biomedical research. Excellence programs for students preparing to do an honours project in biochem or related field. Organized seminars to gain experience presenting and asking questions. Exposure to graduate students for those interested in grad school. Included in the scientific publication process.

    Cons

Lots of work. Unpaid overtime. You do not work shifts, it is salary based and sometimes your experiments require that you stay late, come in early and even come in on the evening and weekends when necessary. Pay is reasonable but not as good as coop opportunities in the gov't for instance. You must be a competitive candidate academically to be considered by most labs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Seem to know what you are doing, no problems here.

I have been working at The Ottawa Hospital

    Pros

Many opportunities to move within the hospital.
Pay is in keeping with ONA guidelines.
    HR department is helpful.
     Educational opportunities.

    Cons

Management is difficult and shows favourtism.
French is really pushed at the the hospital. don't let them tell you it is because we are bilingual..the numbers don't warrant this push except in the minds of the Francophones who work there and want it to be another French first hospital.
    The Civic campus is filthy!
A lot of gossip, bullying and backstabbing amongst a large portion of nurses.Heard it from nearly every floor at the Civic.
Cutbacks in the most ridiculous places. They want to cut the RACE team of all things but tend to find money in the budget to build a new cafeteria, and provide nurse hospital wide with lab coats!
Bad atttitude from many residents and doctors throughout the hospital. EGOS are very big!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

LISTEN to your staff, and not just the select individuals a manager chooses. All staff have valuable input.
Make it easier to report bad behaviour from the doctors and residents who treat nursing like they have no knowledge or important contributions to make when discussing a patient. They should be listening to the front line workers, they are the eyes and ears of the patients!
Managers should be held acountable for their behaviour when they treat staff members unfairly and unequally in comparison to other staff members. Nurses should be able to report this without fear of ramifications within their job and work environment.
