    Pros

After working in Mental Health at other hospitals in Ontario I realize the extreme benefits of working at the Royal Ottawa. The facilities available for patients and staff are top notch, and the freedom and trust provided to patients through the Royal's community and environment. I especially liked the respect with which staff treated students and the frequent conferences and talks that were brought in. The talks given by patients were also very beneficial - bringing clinicians and students into a greater understanding of the lived experience of those living with mental illness.

    Cons

The parking was a major downside to working at the Royal. As a student, I wasn't getting paid a lot and the fees were excessive. Occupational health also was never really aware of my exact position within the facility. It would be useful to increase effective communication between departments.

    Advice to Management

Continue encouraging the inclusion of students and patients in experiences throughout the hospital. Possibly look into negotiating reduced parking fees for students.

    Pros

The culture and atmosphere is very friendly at the hospital, and you can always get along with people if you approach them in a professional and friendly manner.

    Cons

There is a lot of gossip and complaining about other employees behavior and policies.

    Advice to Management

I would tell management to urge an end to the gossip and bad mouthing of other employees, and to try and be more logical and transparent with policies and their intentions.

    Pros

The Ottawa hospital is currently going through many changes to "mature" and become a true world class healthcare centre. It recently did not place in the top 10 among patient satisfaction and was a wake up call $$$ and attracting the best minds in medicine is all about reputation.

    Cons

However there is still nepotism among management (I'll hire your university student you hire mine etc) as we layoff in the name of balancing the budget etc There is also an issue with nurse management, many nurse managers are held to high standards and the units reflect this, there are however some that are scattered and unavailable. Managers that seemingly are a figure head only? Highly paid political appointees. New head of nursing will hopefully clean this up.

    Advice to Management

Integrity and transparency for all departments. Silos should be a red flag that is addressed.

    Pros

adequate benefits package unionized environment promote from within

    Cons

difficult to get vacation granted parking shortages cafeteria is not open evenings or weekends

    Advice to Management

build new parking as soon as possible on new site across road on Carling read "Five Days at Memorial". When the new Civic hospital is eventually built I hope it will have critical care on a lower floor for ease of evacuation if needed.
