I worked at The Pantry full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Some great people work here. Very positive change with the hiring of Dennis Hatchell and CIO change. Nice office in Cary with a great location.

    Cons

some departments are Toxic which makes for a toxic environment. Quite a bit of internal strife which becomes personal when some don't get there way. I was like working with school yard bullies at times. Pay, benefits and growth opportunities are lacking. Inter-departmental battles are the norm.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reel in the personalities to right the ship. The interdepartmental struggles squash morale and sabotage project delivery.

    Pros

Most people are cordial; Some of the IT projects are interesting; Health insurance costs are modest for mediocre coverage

    Cons

HR cannot be trusted; Legal dept exists only to make sure managers are protected from their abuses (like forcing employees to work off the clock); Most ineffective IT group I have ever worked for; Took 8 years to upgrade their ERP system and still can't track costs to the item level; Installed multimillion dollar fuel pricing system that resulted in the worst fuel sales in company history; Installed multimillion dollar time clock system that doesn't work; Took several years to install POS that works in only half the stores; Also they only pay lip service to SARBOX controls (audit nightmare); Management doesn't listen to nor do they care about the employees; Bad employees and managers are often protected by legal team- Innovation is discouraged

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

IT management needs to be completely removed; Senior HR management needs to be completely turned over - Biggest need is to listen to the employees!!!!!!

I have been working at The Pantry full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Really good people at the Corporate Headquarters. A laid back environment with not a lot of stress. Yearly bonuses with some years really good and some just okay. Yearly salary reviews and always at least some kind of raise. Quality, high integrity people and company.

    Cons

Upper level management has had a lot of instability. Sometimes lack of direction and leadership. It seems that upper management does not have a clear strategy or the strategy is always changing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to be more competitive in fuel prices to increase volume and get customers inside the store. Get rid of the layers of mid to higher level management and some of the dead weight employees to become more efficient and profitable. Stop rewarding those who contribute less and reward those who contribute more.

I worked at The Pantry full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

A patriotic company that proudly supports our troops. The company has great brand recognition and fuel prices

    Cons

Projects are never ending and there is tremendous chaos. Chaos is due to people being in the wrong position or having been in the same position so long that change is viewed as a threat. Many good employees left the company because there was no career growth or management support.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Shuffle jobs and consolidate corporate operations. The two sites function as separate companies which results in the never ending projects and chaos.

    Pros

Filled a void between jobs until I was able to find some that better suited my skill sets.

    Cons

Poor leadership. IT dictates to the BU. No adherence to dates and/or timelines. Good old boys club is in full effect. Wrong people in the wrong positions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clean house and get rid of the useless layers of management. Their poor and ineffective management styles are costing the company MILLIONS of dollars.

I worked at The Pantry full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The organization's flexibility of working with your work -life schedule.
Openess to accept new ideas as well as implementation of those ideas. The company's processes and procedures are outdated and they now realize to remain competive they must incorporate a higher caliber employee.
Overall respectfull work enviroment especially now that a new CEO has arrived.

    Cons

The company makes it a practice to under pay/compensate their employees regardless of performance. If you are thinking about becoming a part of this organization negotiate salary, benefits, and vacation upfront.
Software, policy, practices, and procdeures are outdated even though now there are trying to come into the present.
A lot of the managment aren't as knowledgable in their field as they should be.
The company handbook is too open ended. Alot is left to managerial discretion which opens the company to neopotism or favortism issues.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fairly compensate your employees to retain your talent versus talented individuals using this organization as a temporary lay over until something better comes along.
Human Resources needs to create a real handbook and don't leave so much up to managerial discretion.

Up to date technology, central location for corporate, good scheduling, some flex scheduling, good working environment with friendly and helpful coworkers, annual bonus

    Cons

below average salaries, expensive benefits, vacation is low for starting employees, PTO has just been increased from 3 days to 5 days annually, chain of command is not direct, your supervisor may not be your rater

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make lines of responsibility clearer, make managers real managers with full responsiblitiy for all personnel actions
