I worked at The Salvation Army Eastern Territory full-time for more than 7 years
Pros – - Excellent facilities in a convenient location
- Cheap but excellent food served for lunch - I miss this the most
- Felt I was given the space and tools needed to do a good job in a comfortable atmosphere with lots of like-minded people working together
- I feel like for a non-profit, the benefits were generous
Cons – - slow to innovate, encouraged to maintain the status quo, feels like an uphill battle when you want to try something new
- HR was slow to handle some pretty heinous activity, and discipline was uneven within even the same department - not equal treatment for normal employees vs. members of the salvation army employees
- small ladders, no room or plan for job growth and advancement, had to fight for or make up new jobs to get ahead, as leadership is all officers (Pastors)
Advice to Senior Management – Open administrative leadership positions to more employees, move officers to field where they can pastor people rather than be confined to a desk. Leave a minimum of officers in place and allow more employees to advance

I have been working at The Salvation Army Eastern Territory full-time for more than 3 years
Pros – It is nice to know that the profits generated are used to do good for others. Work at the store is fast paced but interesting, every day brings something different. Interacting with the regular customers is also enjoyable.
Cons – Employees are expected to put their job before any personal life. The pay is ridiculously low for the amount of responsibility given. Even supervisors are paid barely above minimum wage. Upper management is concerned only with profit and places little value on finding and keeping good employees.
Advice to Senior Management – Appreciate smart dedicated workers more! Ease up on the bureaucracy and be willing to adapt to modern management and training techniques. Be willing to offer a more competitive salary if you hope to find competent workers. Happy employees make long term employees who put forth more effort into helping you succeed.

I worked at The Salvation Army Eastern Territory
Pros – The Salvation Army really does help people, and the community generally has a positive impression. You get to work with a wide range of people and there is always enough to do!
Cons – The management of the local corps is highly variable depending on who they post there as commanding officer. They have wide latitude regarding how they run operations, and they tend to rotate officers every 3-4 years. Since the officers also have a wide range of education, experience and motivations (and preferences for the kind of people they work with) this means your workplace could go from positive to toxic practically overnight.
Advice to Senior Management – Keep your focus on the core mission, and if the actions or attitudes of officers or other employees are not supporting this, do something about it. Long term local employees definitely work to the advantage of a system that rotates officers so frequently, so do what you can to encourage retention. If previously devoted employees suddenly leave, check into the situation - it may indicate a problem with the officer, not with a true desire on the employee's part to leave. This could be as simple as providing a confidential way for employees to express concerns to the division/territory.

I have been working at The Salvation Army Eastern Territory
Pros – Feels good to help people in need
Good benefits- vacation, sick time, etc.
Very affordable health insurance
Decent compensation
Nice coworkers
Cons – It is difficult working in the community sometimes, especially in impoverished neighborhoods and when the weather is bad.
Not a ton of room for advancement within the agency.
Advice to Senior Management – Look at possibly giving employees raises after they have been there for a certain period of time, as this would prevent turnover.

I have been working at The Salvation Army Eastern Territory
Pros – It's a non-profit that really does good, or at least tries. They really treat their employees well. Lots of holiday time. The work environment is very relaxed. A lot of parties and events throughout the year. The healthcare benefits, as well as others are really good too. A lot of families (couples, cousins, siblings, grandparents, etc) work together here.
Cons – Because it is a religious organization at it's core, some might not feel comfortable. However, the people who work here don't seem to push it on those who might not believe the same things. Again, it really depends on each individual though. The dress code can seem strict sometimes, but again I think it is also due to the fact that it is a religious non-profit that doesn't want to portray anything contrary to it's mission. It's understandable.
Advice to Senior Management – It's already a really great place to work, but sometimes it feels a little uptight.
