    A Professionally Efficient Environment

    Pros

The People. A great group of folks that love the [agency] business.

Their Work. The staff show great pride in the work product delivered to the client across all departments.

The Office & Location. I certainly wouldn't call it your typical agency environment, but the office atmosphere allows for a very professional and comfortable experience (offices, kitchen, common areas).

Learning. One of the best environments I've seen for interns or entry levels to touch the business on so many different levels and get a well-rounded working education.

    Cons

Agency Culture. The shop is at a pivotal transition point, re-establishing who they are and where they'd like to be. It's an encouraging exercise and was needed both internally with employees and externally in how the shop markets itself.

The Opportunity to Bring [Positive] Change. The agency has been around longer than most independent shops combined and for this it should be applauded. But while leadership has personally seen the successes and failures of his agency and industry throughout 3 decades, it also has the tendency to be remain stubborn, not allowing fresher approaches of others to be BOTH heard and acted upon.

Military Inspired Management Protocols. There's nothing wrong with running a "tight ship" ...or have a "plan of attack" that's designed from "field intelligence"...but these battleship analogies and infantry work styles don't make for the most inspiring, creatively freethinking spaces.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remind yourself [and others around you] that there is a "GROUP" in your agency's name. Be proud of that. You've been able to do what few have accomplished, much less sustain.

Now recognize that while you've always been in THE leadership role, you've been supported by the insight, sweat, diligence, passion, and creativity of many in these 30 years...whether they are still with you today or have moved on. The best could be yet to come.

    Pros

You get out what you put in. Small teams, so theres a lot of opportunity to shine if your a hard worker. Lazy people need not apply!
Pride in work. Because of the small teams, and the responsibilities shared between fewer people, there's a lot of pride going into everything.
    Location, location location!

    Cons

Not as much as an typical agency feel.
A little more rigid then one would expect for an agency, but there does seem to be a cultural shift going on. People just need to believe in it and embrace it!
Needs a little more flexibility with working hours, but hours generally aren't that bad.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get more collaboration among employees. Stop using phones, promote walking to someone’s office or call them over, get some more interaction in there!
Love the new view of changing the agency culture and vision/mission statements. SJG has it's downsides, just like any employer, but it well intentioned and on the right path. Just give some more freedom to the employees, and you'll get it back tenfold!

    Pros

People, opportunity for hands on training, an expectation to bring best game, atmosphere promoting growth and positive change personally and professionally.

    Cons

Residual negativity from previous management lingers in some staff. Smaller team means people are in your "business" more than healthy...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to step back and allow your team to shine! Make chain of command clearer. Keep momentum of change going..

    Pros

Great opportunity at this organization to get in and become part of a growing company. You are given an opportunity to show what you can do here and that is rewarded with more responsibilties and your own personal career growth. Great atmosphere with the interaction amongst employees from all departments and nice benefits with company provided lunches, breakfasts and a multitude of other perks.

    Cons

Not too much of an agency culture here - yet! Management is working on re-identifying & defining the culture within the agency but it hasn't been established yet.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep changing things up and looking at new ways to do things across all levels of the organization.

    Pros

Some of the people, usually, other interns.

    Cons

Extremely disillusioned by the whole experience. My supervisor was a complete fake and a wanna-be. I once thought that people in high positions actually had substance however I am beginning to think that its more like they have something on the boss.

    Pros

If you like acting and theatrical performances this is the place.
Great experience if you're coming in to learning about TRADITIONAL ways of running an advertising agency.
Good for Interns to really see and discover early on if advertising is their true calling.
You can gain experience in your networking and people skills.
It's located in center of city, plenty of nearby restaurants and shops

    Cons

    Con:
    *Unnecessary office internal drama
    *Nonprofessional of upper management
*Organizational chart not clear to many
*Constant change of titles and authority
*Huge turn over of employees which leads to retraining of staff
*Interns and entry level employees are constantly given the big projects which leads to long nights and long learning curves.
*Company is trying to constantly establish their vision and mission which ends up with mixed teams and professionals not knowing which way to follow.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Evaluate all of your key players and maybe if you invest time, money and lots of deserved respect into them eventually you'll get that in return, or not!

    Pros

The people who work at the San Jose Group are a dynamic, intelligent, and friendly bunch. They are constantly striving to acheive and exceed the expectations of their customers and their supervisors. It makes for a great working environment. Also, the kitchen is swanky.

    Cons

It does seem like people live in fear of the reprisals of the senior management. That at times inhibits its workers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let your employees be people; they will be more productive if you do.

One of life's trials, but a good place to learn the business.

    Pros

A good starter company that offers Account Service people a diversity in Clients and job functions that expertly touch almost every area in Account management.

    Cons

Vertical movement not actively cultivated. Highly frugal operation make initial job negotiations regarding title, salary etc. all the more crucial to prospective candidates.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior management is somewhat restricted by Owner(s). Company should shift some of its concern over having a premium brand status to that of it's Clients in terms of offering added value even across SJG's various departments - truly its strength.

Tremendous opportunity for experience and growth if you're driven, accountable and a quick-thinker.

Current Employee - Anonymous Employee  in  Chicago, IL
Current Employee - Anonymous Employee in Chicago, IL

    Pros

It is a very collaborative environment. No one throws anyone under the bus, and people work together to get the job done. As a mid-size agency, there is great opportunity to work with other departments, and get your feet wet everywhere. If you have a strong work ethic and the motivation to work hard to get ahead, senior leadership will recognize this is you and mentor you to accomplish your goals.

    Cons

Not sure that this is a bad thing... but there's never a dull day. There's always something going on, and work to be done. If you're bored, then you're not involved enough and need to speak up, show intiative and they'll make sure to keep you busy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Some advice for senior leadership would be to continue to include junior-level employees on new business pitches. Overall, the experience is very beneficial for a more junior professional to see how senior leadership develops decks, and pitches prospects.
