Lots of jobs available because all the experienced employees are either being let go, retiring or leaving.

    Pros

The flexible work schedule is great. Company is based in Oregon so if you are a resident there are more opportunities. The employees are really hard working and you will make a lot of friends.

    Cons

Standard simply stopped caring about there long term experienced employees which has resulted in a lot of long time employees leaving. Standard also decided to let well know established employees go without a lot of explanation except that they didn't have the skills to do the job. They don't ask their knowledgeable and talented and dedicated employees to stay they just let them walk out the door like they don't matter. These employees made Standard what it is and it's as if it doesn't matter to the CEO or anyone. Standard is just full of YES men and women who do whatever they tell them to do and if you have a different opinion they find a way to get rid of you. Standard is also becoming more of a follower than a leader. They are way behind technology wise and they are trying to be like everyone else which makes them nothing special which is what they used to be. They have way too many upper and mid managers who nobody knows what they do. HR is still a small closed off group that has made it clear that they are not there for the employees. They are there to protect the company.

    Advice to Management

HR needs to share with the employees what the vision for the company is. It's been almost two year now and I think the employees would appreciate it if you would let them in on your little secret. HR also needs to stop showing up at meetings and forums just to say "we have a plan." If you have a plan, roll it out! Also quit blacklisting employees when they share an opinion. Reach out to current and former employees and see if they may like to try new opportunities or even come back. Standard still has a chance to make it up to all of those former employees who have left or were let go for whatever reason they decided on.

    Pros

Reasonable benefits and a few different options Since they are an actual 401k administrator, they offer excellent benefits by way of this Employee perks such as discount cards Exceptional pay Executives are personable and you can actually have friendly conversations with them

    Cons

Stiff culture (examples include stiff workplace environment, unreasonable dress code) Lean operations so there are tight budgets Lots of necrotism and shoulder tapping for positions

    Advice to Management

Listen to the suggestions your employees have as opposed to doing things simply by numbers.

    Pros

reasonable benefits, downtown location and if you can manage to find a decent manager, not too horrible

    Cons

While Care About People & Do the Right Thing were two of the core values of the company, it certainly seems like those have been thrown out the window in favor of lining the wallets of senior management. The "lifers" have started leaving as they no longer believe in the organization...always a bad sign...

    Advice to Management

Pull your head out of your behinds and get back to the core values that made the company a great one to work for that inspired the enduring loyalty of your employees

    Pros

It still does have very good health benefits when compared to market averages. Vision, dental, Trimet subsidized, employee gatherings.

    Cons

You can tell too many hands are in the cookie jar. Profit has become the only concern. The CEO has made reference to people complaining about pay increase freezes and "restructuring" performance reviews to "nobody that works here is eating top ramen." Showing a sensitivity few have shown, especially while making over 9 million a year. Very old buildings downtown with cubicles from the 60's, maybe before. Technology on the "way" back burner.

    Advice to Management

Profits may be moving in the right direction but employee morale is not. This used to be a company people believed in. Now the only concern is the almighty dollar. It comes at a price as everyone I know is looking else where for employment.

    Cons

Clueless management, outdated technology, inability to make decisions

    Advice to Management

Sell to someone bigger. The business will be driven more and more by technology in the future and at the rate you move, you won't be able to keep up.

    Pros

    Great benefits and corporate location.

    Cons

Low Salaries and yearly increases are far and few in between, due to the employee performance review grading system. Company is primarily production oriented and I question some of the management's qualifications and decision making abilities.

    Advice to Management

Revert back to a customer oriented environment, since your business relies upon satisfied insurance employers and employees.

    Pros

Their best asset is the people that work there, but that is in rapid decline. Work/life balance isn't bad. Base salary isn't awful, but negotiate aggressively because it's not going to go up.

    Cons

When starting, I was amazed by the length of time everyone had been at the company. Standard was a spectacular employer, until they went public. It's been a slow, steady decline since. They have a great group of people working there, but it's because they've all been there since it was worth being there. They're committed to their jobs because they remember what it used to be. Standard is now like any other company. They will razzle dazzle you during your first few weeks on job, but the complete lack of quality training you'll receive is going to be indicative of what the rest of your experience will be. Systems are outdated, employees are all completely demoralized, and management has themselves convinced they're on a good path because the stock price is going up. The only employees sticking around are people who have been around long enough to be in the pension plan, or just haven't found a job elsewhere yet. They're going to pitch you a line about how good it is to work there, and how they care about their employees. It will not pan out. They pitch the same line every year, and every year you'll be lucky to get a raise even near inflation, while the executive compensation continues to climb.

    Advice to Management

Their goal is to please stockholders, not the employees. They're doing a bang up job.

    Pros

There are some good co-workers who try to make for a positive environment. The have an ok community perks package with occasional drawing for free tickets to theater performances, OMSI passes, etc.

    Cons

Disjointed leadership, constantly changing directions of the company, outdated technology, workload is unreasonable, there is no equity in the expectations from employee to employee, no unified vision for management

    Advice to Management

You can't just put a fresh coat of paint over the problems with your employee engagement. Significant core changes need to be made to the work environment, management style and technology if you want to remain competitive in the market.

Get to live in Oregon Generally good people to work with day to day Living in the NW is great.

    Cons

Sourced IT to IBM India where they we do not do business and weeks to get simple things done is now the norm. Unable to understand priorities set by management. Management has completely failed at expanding business. CEO is rude to employees, does not consider them valuable.

    Advice to Management

Consider treating the staff with more respect and take into account the knowledge they have in order to make the company more efficient and profitable.
