    Bastion of exploitation

    Assistant Manager (Former Employee)
    San Francisco, CA

ProsIt's an easy job to get when your desperate. Because they are franchises hiring is done buy the owners who often work there themselves because UPS squealed their profit margins.

ConsThey don't pay well because they don't make much money. They stores are exploited by UPS so they exploit their employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf all the store owners, stood together and challenged UPS instead of undercutting each other they might actually service and become great places to work. If you don't act fast UPS will find a way to automate your function and push you out of business.

    The Ups Store-Certified Packing Expert

Certified Packing Expert Or Retail Associate (Current Employee)
    Amarillo, TX

ProsCan be very flexible. Can work overtime during peak seasons. "Ok" bonuses during Christmas. You learn something new almost everyday so it's kind of exciting(specially if your at a busy store). I work at a busy store so time flies by. This job allows you to build great relationships with customers as well as box holders.

ConsThe pay is not too great. The job provides NO benefits. This job is an individual franchise so hours, days/times you have to work can be a pain sometimes; at times you can actually get a call to come to work at the last minute even if your supposed to be off or come in later, whatever the situation is. This job can be very overwhelming at times.

    Manager

    Assistant Manager (Former Employee)
    Boston, MA

ProsWorking close with owners. Learn the fundamentals of running your own business. Use your skills and knowledge you learn to start a career in shipping logistics. Requires being a great problem solver.

ConsTerrible pay for managers. Dead end job. No room for advancement.

Advice to Senior ManagementTo owners that do not work in their own centers. Take a week and work hand in hand with your employee's once in a while. Find out how much they are worth and who this job is not suited for. It is your business, PROTECT IT.

Depends on the owner and district

    Store Manager (Former Employee)
    Columbia, SC

ProsI was lucky enough to have exceptional owners to work for. They weren't able to pay what they wanted but I always felt appreciated. No working crack-of-dawn mornings, late nights or Sundays. We were also lucky to have good owners around us who helped out w/questions and a terrific district manager.

ConsSo, so, so much to learn. After 5 years, including 3 years as store manager, there were still situations that I had to solve and had never seen before.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe royalty rate is astronomically high which makes profits harder to make. The stores are typically too close to one another and they aren't always in the right areas. Not a lot of room for advancement unless you become a store owner. No benefits. Such is the life in franchises.

Always something different an incredible work experience

    Store Manager (Current Employee)
    Ponca City, OK

ProsThe UPS Stores are each privately owned and operated. The small "family like" environment makes for a great place to work with flexibility for many occasions. The Christmas "Peak" Season is fast paced and nothing short of exciting.

ConsTime off for more than a day or two at a time can be very difficult to come by. The staffing of at the locations is often 4-6 people and those individuals are needed on a consistent basis. Being that these are small franchised stores there is not much room for advancement.
