Good money good people, but interns do monotonous work. No smoking on company property (not even in your car).

I worked at The United Illuminating Company as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

Field work is a nice break
    Management is supportive
Internship comes with a $2500 scholarship

    Cons

IT staff slow to respond to calls / tickets
Facebook and Twitter (and every proxy site known to man) are blocked really well
No smoking on company property (not even in your car) so you have to walk a quarter mile to smoke a butt

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Total overhaul in IT needed

    Recommends
    Neutral Outlook
    No opinion of CEO

I have been working at The United Illuminating Company full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

-still somewhat stable employment compared to most companies
    -benefits are better than most
    - small enough where you can make a difference
    - telecommuting available if mgr allows

    Cons

    - nightmare place to work post gas company merger
    - no upward advancement. Managers hold on tight and won't let their employees advance to other opportunities
    - outsourcing in IT (there are incompetent Wipro resources all over the place)
    - the company culture is to take action without any long-term planning
    - the review process is a joke. If you don't agree you still have to sign off to get bonus
    - aforementioned bonus process makes long-term planning difficult. Everyone just concentrates on yearly goals with no thought to how it will affect co in future
    - there are single points of dependencies everywhere

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cancel contract with Wipro ASAP. Stop hiring castoffs from PB
Rework HR. upward mobility in company is horrendous.

    Doesn't Recommend
    Negative Outlook
    Disapproves of CEO

    Pros

In the right department, you will be challenged and rewarded

    Cons

if you are in the wrong department you are treated like a child and even if you are a professional, salaried employee treated as though you are an hourly worker at mcdonalds

I have been working at The United Illuminating Company

    Pros

Stable job; great benefits, ie, pension plan for those hire pre2006(?); ability to move laterally to different areas, so you can learn more about the business.

    Cons

Rife with nepotism; promotions depends on how well you're liked, not at all on what you know; this causes low morale among some, myself included.
