I have been working at The University of Adelaide as a contractor for more than 3 years

    Pros

There are many pros to working at The University of Adelaide, the biggest in my opinion is the constant option to go on secondments. A secondment to those who don't know is where you have the option to leave the position you were hired in to fill a contract position, whilst you're in this new contract someone may be hired to fill your substantive position however if you're contract ends and the secondment isn't continued you get to have your old job back.

    Other pros:
. Continuing employees are entitled to 17% superannuation
. Constant enterprise agreement pay rises, usually 2-3 per year
. 15 days sick leave per year
. 3 days of special leave a year for various reasons, including a moving house day that doesn't come out of annual leave
. 6 months maternity leave at full pay or 1 year at half pay with the ability to utilise all annual leave accrued as well
. Bulk billing at the two university doctors for staff, one located on campus and the other in the mall
. Picturesque campus (if you work there) as well as modern facilities for other office buildings
. Leave loading is saved up and paid out at the beginning of December, kind of feels like a bonus for presents
. Pay is very reasonable for professional staff members, many people would not be paid so well outside of the University

    Cons

. Little staff development other than secondments
. Hard to move up to more senior positions when you are at a mid range level
. Only one option for a superannuation company
. Basically no PDR management at all
    . Office politics like anywhere
. Hard to actually get into the University in mid level professional positions, seems like a lot of friends get hired
. Job security can be tough with a lot of people on fixed term positions, as a result people tend to only stick around for a year or so meaning teams are having to constantly train up new staff members
. So many staff members means it's hard to regulate and enforce procedures, lot's of staff members being made to perform higher duties without getting paid for it etc

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

as a mid level employee (HE04) I often feel unimportant, hardly any options for growth for us at all.

I have been working at The University of Adelaide full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Nice and relaxed environment with interesting work. Potential to influence people with your good work. Educated and potent managers. Excellent work-life balance.

    Cons

May be salary, but in education sector this is expected. Many jobs are contract based. Sometimes you may feel that you can contribute more but there may not be enough scope to use your full skill set.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the good work and please try to create continuing positions or at least with longer contracts.
