    Smart, fun people; disorganized management

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsThere are a lot of friendly, smart people working at TheLadders. Unfortunately, the management team lacks experience, and projects are cut. Rough attempts at establishing a unified vision ultimately affect team morale, and even jobs.

ConsIndecision about the company's business goals creates an unstable culture. Many employees leave for better opportunities, sometimes just one year of working there.

Advice to Senior ManagementBecome more organized: share a collective corporate vision and execute it thoroughly. Invest more in your company's culture too by crafting stronger talent development plans.

    Really Smart People. Lacking Direction

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsThe people at the company are amazing. This is a place full of smart, cool and friendly people who are honestly trying to do great work and build amazing products. If you don't want to always be the smartest person in the room, this could be a good place for you.

ConsThe leadership team is young, passionate and inexperienced. Hence they tend to make decisions about the direction of the company without necessarily thinking them through. Once a decision is made, they go all in - investing time, money and people into whatever the latest new initiative is. Then, when the going gets tougher than expected, they tend to completely abort the effort, laying waste to people's effort, time, work, and sometimes jobs.

Advice to Senior ManagementWhen you make strategy decisions, develop plans A, B and C. That way when things don't go as expected you can avoid a lot of panic and drama.

most fun place I've worked yet

    Software Engineer (Former Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsGreat people. Mostly a no fluff technical team with strong developers heavily invested in Uncle Bob's Software Craftsmanship concepts and a service oriented architecture. They are also getting into responsive design, a thicker JavaScript style web client and iOS development.

Free snacks and unlimited vacation for salaried employees. Plenty of people hitting the local bars after work. Mostly young crowd.. don't think anyone who works there is over 45.

ConsAs you can expect no place is perfect. There are often struggles to balance engineering perfection with business needs and requested deadlines. A number of expensive product and service experiments were performed over the past few years which produced little to no revenue results. In 2012 most of these were terminated and the focus has returned to the core offering.

Advice to Senior Managementcontinue to make much smaller bets with your experiments and really determine what your customers want

Terrible, scammy company on the decline

    Software Engineer (Former Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsFree drinks and food. Unlimited vacation. If you kiss ass well and take orders blindly, you will survive.

ConsThe last review is such a PR piece, I had to chime in. This review has a tech slant.

This is a company that used to have a CTO, VP of Engineering, Directors of Engineering, etc. Now, it has none of those. It went from about 50 techies to about 12. They fired a bunch of people a few months ago, and have been firing people since. So you tell me if this is a company that is growing.

The product vision is definitely more focused. They cut all the growth projects that weren't working, and are concentrating on their core - direct marketing, i.e. spam, to generate subscriptions. This business is all about converting a small percentage of the people they spam into subscribers. Their goal is not to get people a job, it's to keep them paying a subscription by having them think there is value in the site.

As far as culture, the only people left are ones that manage up well (read, the sycophantic). They instituted rules like having to get to work by 9:30, like that would improve the development of the crappy products. They also have you work a mandatory, arbitrary 12 hours a day for made up deadlines driven by a directionless management team. They will cater dinner in though, like that makes it better.

The tech stack is a hodge podge of whatever people want to use, It's not about the pragmatic application of technology at all. Engineers are cogs here, and not valued for their talent or ideas. Why else would you treat them like hourly wage workers, mandating things like a 9:30 start time?

Basically, if you want to help scam people out of money, and do it with a cliquey group of devs who think working on Apple hardware makes up for it, this is your place. No lie, they have developers do shady things like keep auto renew on for previously paying members when the service moved to free in the UK, etc. Your ideas won't be valued if they aren't in line with the company directive - spam and generate subscription revenue, and keep those suckers hooked as long as possible. This is the business.

    Good Experience.

    --- (Former Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsDue to it being a growing company, there are opportunities for some (but not all) people. The HR team works hard to develop programs to make the environment and the organization as pleasant to work at as possible (and is successful). The kitchen is stocked with tasty goodies-- many chosen with feedback from teh employees.

ConsUnfortunately there is no talent development plan for the remainder of employees.

At times the strategy is haphazard, with work and projects being cancelled due to reasons that possibly could have been foreseen.

Mass lay-offs and Inconsistency while being fun

    Enterprise Sales (Current Employee)

ProsThe people you work with are people you'd want to hit happy hour with, the Soho/TriBeCa location the office atmosphere is lax along its the dress-code

ConsTerrible management, poor communication, no direction

Okay place to work, somewhat unstable

    Software Engineer (Current Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsRelatively smart co-workers, many genuinely nice people, a lot of drinking with co-workers, a well stocked kitchen, and great coffee..., nice workstation/technology supplies for developers.

ConsNot much room for advancement, frequent job changes/project changes/layoffs. Company does not seem to know what it is doing. Not much work/life balance in some areas. Extremely high turnover, especially among upper management.

    Great ground-level experience...

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsGround level office experience, learned job search skills/knowledge which will come in useful. The people and lower level managers are all great to work with, and from a professional perspective this will help to grow my network for the future.

ConsSalary is substandard. The company makes many frequent changes and has trouble creating consistently successful programs. I've survived one very large, mass-layoff and another minor set of layoffs, both due to upper management's failure to determine the best plan for new programs. Since they have this difficulty, they inflate bonuses to 8K-10K for lower level, hourly employees, not expecting to have to pay it out.

Not the place to start any kind of career. Run.

    Resume Writer (Former Employee)
    New York, NY

    Pros-The kitchen is stocked regularly.

-Your co-workers are smart and well-adjusted. They know it is a bad job. They will help you out.

-The work environment is casual dress - like button-down and jeans. You can telecommute if you need to, which is nice.

-There is one good boss in the Resume department. You can figure out who he is really quickly.

-Getting to talk with a variety of people about their jobs can be very interesting.

Cons- There are bosses in the department that are proud of not having any experience writing resumes (BAD SIGN), and have no interest in employee feedback about how to improve the process.

-They employ a top-down management style with no connection to reality. Inflated perspective of employee capabilities, they think that 15+ resumes (avg: 10-12, 14 on a good week) is possible.

They also think it is possible to write a resume PERFECTLY in 3 hours, from start to finish, call and revisions included, with no re-writes from the customer. Maybe all of this is possible when pigs fly?

    - The quotas are not possible to meet without putting in unpaid overtime (Irony: they hate paying overtime and they hate people staying late to finish work, but how do you get the results if you don't?).

-They are cheap, and the contract is misleading. They want to pay the $10/hr, $15/hr overtime rate as long as they can. You have NO CHANCE of making the $50,000 they promised; they changed the commission rates on the contract halfway through my time there to an "all or nothing" rate to try and drive performance.

-There is high turnover. You find out why very quickly.

Advice to Senior ManagementAll or nothing commission can only work when "all" is a realistic figure. Fire anybody who has not written resumes at TheLadders, or sticks by a production time frame that doesn't include bathroom breaks, lunch, revisions, research, responding to email, and meetings.

Adjust the production quota and commission structure to be realistic. Not all resumes are sales resumes that can be completely done in three hours!

Say goodbye to work/life balance - If you are a Resume Writer, you will not have any.

Outside of entry level jobs, there is no ladder here, just a revolving door
