Pros
The brand name is good. The company is established
Cons
There is NO advancement opportunity. If you are in the "in-crowd" or buddy-buddy with someone in mangement, you will NOT get promoted and see NO career advancement. It truly is not what you know but WHO you know here. Stay away if you have dreams of having a job higher than the one you come into the door with.
Advice to Senior Management
Stop playing favorites, make requirements for advancements CLEAR and PUBLIC, and stick to it.
Pros
Thomson Reuters offers a wide variety of opportunities to gain experience and knowledge in your chosen field especially in the areas of Legal and Technology. They are striving to elevate the perception of the company as a good place to work and attempting to position themselves as a technology company.
Cons
Career opportunities and advancement at Thomson Reuters are limited and run out fast. Achievements are not adequately rewarded with compensation or advancement.
Advice to Senior Management
If you appreciate the work of your top performers then invest in them. Company picnics do not count as rewards.
Pros
Very family friendly
Great work facilities and ammenities
Cons
Very old boys club
Layoffs done by job, not by performance - you could work really hard and get let go just because they can justify eliminating your position. So some people stay forever and hardly work and others work really hard and still get let go. Very de-motivating.
Advice to Senior Management
Reward your best employees and stop basing layoffs on jobs instead of performance
Pros
very flexible and lots of independence
Cons
minimal feedback and incentives to perform well, can be long and boring
Advice to Senior Management
More communication with interns, more initial training, and more information about how our work contributes to the legal publishing world would have been very useful.
Pros
Great place to write software, very little 3rd party applications.
Write software that is similar to what Google search is doing, but without millions of results, just specific ones on point.
Cons
Lackluster mid level leadership
Company is heavily focusing on the bottom line
salary is below market
leadership tends to manage up and not down
Advice to Senior Management
Bring back the fun, lots of smart people turn them loose.
Pros
Good benefits
3 weeks vacation (4 weeks after 5 years) and 1 week sick leave
Cons
No work from home option
Politics
Pros
I really like the work environment. Not having the campus in the downtown area is a real plus because it makes the commute much more manageable.
Cons
The business model of operating several subsidiaries makes communication across business entities difficult sometimes. I think some of the technology could be streamlined and upgraded.
Pros
The work/life balance is not bad. Telecommuting is available. Benefits are decent. Coworkers are friendly and professional. The work is intellectually challenging and rewarding.
Cons
Salaries are too low compared to the rest of the industry. Too many jobs are outsourced at the expense of quality. Management just uses the excuse of a slower economy year after year to keep salary raises at a bare minimum while sending numerous jobs overseas.
Advice to Senior Management
Change management from the top down. Abandon failed policies of outsourcing and salary cuts. There will never be sustained growth until employees are properly motivated.
Pros
You will be treated well and respected by your managers and most of your coworkers. Work is usually challenging
Cons
Compensation is lower compared to other technology companies. The company recognition is quite low outside of the professions that use their products. The hierarchy is typical of most large corporations that stifle creativity.
Advice to Senior Management
Try to foster creativity within the company instead of just acquiring new companies for innovation.
Pros
Flexible and great work environment. Friendly co-workers, nice cafeterias, outdoor grills etc.
Cons
Pay is below average the market. Specially if it is the first job, climbing up the payscale at a sloth pace is tough. Bonus is very minimal.
