Run from this place as fast as you can.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Eagan, MN

ProsThe free coffee in the C building is pretty good.

ConsManagement cares only about the appearance of things and not for real suggestions for improving processes. Promotions and advancement are not based on ability and people magically appear in higher positions when no one else knew that a position was open.
Compensation and pay raises are too closely tied to an immediate supervisor's personal opinion of an employee. Despite the fact that the reviews are supposed to be objective and based on facts, when managers fail to follow this procedure, there is no recourse.
I had a rotating array of at least half a dozen people to whom I reported to at any given moment.

Advice to Senior ManagementCull the herd of numerous middle managers that contribute nothing to the company other than filling chairs in constant and unnecessary meetings.
Institute procedures to allow employees to have a voice in the review of management.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend

Great place to work, depending on what you do.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Eagan, MN

ProsGreat benefits, good work / life balance, career growth potential, healthy work environment, great office options including company store, Carabou Coffee, free fruit and milk. There are so many areas of the company that would be good to work for, depending on your skill set and aspirations, it could be the place for you. A big company makes you have to work hard if you have any hope of being promoted. Tuition reimbursment is great, as well.

ConsToo much corporate politics (which you'd get anywhere, though), turnover is high within the company, parking can be rough, always facing reorgs and change management,

Advice to Senior ManagementMore communication to middle management and all employees, working at such a big company can cause communication to suffer

    Solid growth, professional atmosphere

    Vice President (Former Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsThere is career advancement at Thomson West. However, even though the "merger" happened over 5 years ago and Thomson was the acquiring company, the Minnesota-based West Publishing culture still prevails.

ConsIf you are in the Eagan office, then you are in the center of the universe. In the field, it can be difficult to get things done without travelling out to Minnesota.

Advice to Senior ManagementFor a large organization, West is fairly nimble and there are a lot of smart people in the organization.

I have never left a day at this company unhappy. People treat you with respect.

    Manager (Current Employee)
    Eagan, MN

ProsThe people are respectful and motivated. Regular hours and the suburban location. Many in management support taking risks to improve the way we go about our work.

ConsPay is average. Some management positions are not posted.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep up the communication. Keep an eye on the new generation (Millenials) and how they operate/what motivates them.

A great place to work ... for a while.

    Manager (Former Employee)
    Los Angeles, CA

ProsIndustry leader. Decent Compensation. Westlaw is the best product in the market, way better than the competitor Lexis Nexis.

ConsCareer advancement is difficult. You can stay in sales or account management, take a pay cut to go in to management and then wait for years to progress after that.

Advice to Senior Managementrespect your employees and pay them accordingly.

The best company to work for!

    Customer Service Associate (Current Employee)
    Taguig (Philippines)

ProsWork life balance, great pay, wonderful supervisors and great officemates! Though it is hard to get accepted in this company, it's totally worth the effort.

ConsThere isnt really a con to working, every company has its downsides. Sometimes we just have to adjust tothe workload. West supports a lot of products so sometimes it can get confusing.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Learned a lot, but was difficult to have a sustainable career.

    Sales Representative (Former Employee)

Pros- Upward mobility possible if you make your quotas and are a team player.
     - Great money back in the day (I left the company in 2008 before the market crash) before law firms started cutting costs and subscriptions.
     - Great products and services to sell.
     - Strong brand and very strong resources in Eagan for product information and sales support.

Cons- Territories typically change every year (challenge to develop meaningful client relationships).
     - Highly unstable environment (products come in and out of your bag often) and high turnover
     - Experience can vary widely depending upon your sales manager
     - Highly complex compensation plans
     - Zero base salary (again, this was a while back - I believe field sales people are paid salaries now).

Advice to Senior ManagementInstitute better vetting processes for hiring and promoting management; develop processes to ensure consistency of customer experience.

This is a very large bureaucratic company. Know that going in.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThey seem to recruit well. Most of colleagues are wonderful, intelligent people.

ConsHign turnover, management always changing, lower on pay scale, many times the right hand doesn't know what the left has done.
