I have been working at Thorntons (Kentucky) full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Hours are definitely available if you are wanting and willing to work.
    Friendly co-workers.
Local Environment (You will practically see a lot of faces very frequently.)

    Cons

Lack of hours esp. on the weekends in which management is usually not around past a certain time in a 24 hour establishment puts a lot more stress on regular "cashiers" to have to literally fill that role as far as solving problems and completing tasks.

No-shift differential for overnight and unless in a major store(or one that has been robbed) you are usually left alone to handle numerous amounts of tasks with customers coming in throughout the night.

Shaky schedule, depending on the situation overnight workers are often scheduled to work the afternoon shift as well ex 10p-6am then 2p-10p same day. lack of WLB for full time employees.

Personal Growth is non-existent at Thornton's for many CSR's the harder you work the more they ask of you with no incentive.

Low-pay, No bonuses, Terrible benefits package.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

At the end of the day great talent needs to be recognized, in a growing company and one that is making great strides with the new rewards program its time someone in upper management took the time to acknowledge the employees that make it happen on a daily basis. Another issue is that on the overnight there should be 2 people on at all times with the money being made with the new rewards program there is no reason why third shift employees should be left alone in a store to handle the numerous tasks at hand on a typical night it'd also keep the said person relaxed as they would have someone nearby. My issues with scheduling is that Full-time status should only be given to those who can work full-time during the week and weekends too often in stores there are full-time employees not working weekends or nights this basically leave the weekends to the part timers or a full-timer who's relegated as the weekender who then eventually leave because who wants to work every weekend? This company is growing and really has no reason not to try and make things easier for its employees there are many other issues I could address such as lack of control in stores to get products that sell and so forth but I am not here to write an essay.

My advice to anyone looking for a job here, is know that this job is rough you wont make much and depending on the staff may be asked to carry the load for the slack.

I have been working at Thorntons (Kentucky) full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Thornton's is an employee owned company which is a very good benefit to all employees. They really care about their customers and want to provide excellent customer service.

    Cons

The hours are a bit overwhelming when you are in management. The stores operate on very little hours so when an employee calls off or is sick the management team generally is required to work the additional shifts.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look more closely at your individual store needs. When new management takes over a location a lot can change which can positively change the hours needed to operate. I feel that after 3 months a new evaluation of operating hours should be looked at to accommodate the needs of the store.

    Pros

They work around your schedule if you need that and the people you meet there are absolutely amazing. The managers are really supportive and nice too. The pay is reasonable considering you really do not do that much if you are a cashier.

    Cons

Not much to say here, I really enjoyed my time at the company. Maybe keep everyone doing what they are supposed to be doing, because sometimes people just stand around doing nothing. There is always something that can use some cleanings or mopping.

I have been working at Thorntons (Kentucky) full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The best reason it's a job in this economy, some of the employees are nice pleasant and respectful including management and above.

    Cons

The lies of being promoted and trained to move into management but never happens. If you are of mature age anything over 35 and hired on don't expect to be promoted at all that is hot the younger ones. Management having you fo their work along with all the duties you have to do during a shift, for they are busy on their cell phones and or outside smoking. They say you get two 10 minute breaks but you will be lucky to get a restroom break. Management allowing certain employees favors over others. They will take advantage of you if you are always saying yes to working more but you get nothing in return. Training of new employees is done by employees whose work skills are not that great and the employees who have great work skills are never allowed to train new employees. The amount of work to be done on a shift with just 2 people is unreasonable especially for barely above minimum wage.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Wake up and realize that no matter the age a great employee is an essential employee to any company. That work and personal life need proper balance to keep good employees. That age discrimination is against the law no matter how you try to make it look like something else. You need trainers that do nothing but train employees do that your training is consistent across the board , that you need to raise wages for CSR's, provide more than 2 employees on a shift 3 would be better and more efficient and last but not least provide a better balance between work and time off.

    Pros

close to home, full time work.

    Cons

where shall I start??? We have gotten 100% in the "shops" three times in a row, yet we got 10 cent raises, no more bonuses, and our insurance was cut. The place is a gold mine, but just for the CEO. We are held responsible for thieves driving off, yet they keep the pumps the same instead of pay first, cause it's a "family atmosphere." It took a person dying, before they put another person at night for a few hours, Their is a "good ole boy" atmosphere in this company, if you aren't a boy, you are expendable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Appreciate your hard workers, and don't condone bad ones.

I worked at Thorntons (Kentucky) full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Growing company, always hiring, decent possibilities to move up to SM level, fast paced, nice co-workers, challenging, excellent perks at the General Manager level and above, and an excellent opportunity to learn different areas of business.

    Cons

Terrible work-life balance (especially if you have a family), mandatory 50 hrs/wk for SM and above, high stress, extremely low pay for amount time/work put in, high standards and expectations with little incentives, impossible to take vacations, only get 1 week vacation/yr until your 3rd year- then you get 2 weeks, high turnover, lack of quality staff (low pay), little chance to move up into corporate positions, politics, nepotism- so family/friends getting promoted and holding the desirable positions (especially at the corporate office.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Enforce an anti-nepotism clause for future employees (it's good business ethics), be more supportive to SM's and GM's taking vacation. While you are at it, start management out with 2 weeks vacation a year. 1 week vacation a year is not enough for the amount to time you spend at the store. Studies have proven that a good work-life balance makes employees far more productive and efficient, because they are happy.
