I have been working at Tidewater Community College part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

People are kind and considerate. Able to manage the course work independently. Making a huge contribution to the community. Keeps me abreast of theoretical concepts and practical applications.

    Cons

Full time work is out! Adjuncts are there to give full time employees opportunity to participate in grant functions, professional development and inexpensive course work correction. Pay and hours are limited.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need unified coursework between campus majors.

    Cons

No room for growth and will leave you with the same position and salary from when you started!

    Pros

Flexible work schedule, most work is not micro-managed, good job security once you are "in," free coffee

    Cons

Way too many administrators create useless work and meetings for faculty to attend. Racism is rampant at TCC and people are often hired (or not hired) based upon their race, not their qualifications. Changes are very slow, except those decided upon by administrators in closed meetings. Lots of cliques, watch your back!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Trust the faculty more, get rid of so many useless administrator-level positions.

    Pros

TCC's mission is carried out daily with more and more students learning and graduating with degrees.
Much needed growth of the organization, especially in physical structures, has been rapid, yet managed well
New leadership at the top is excellent

    Cons

Mid-level management in some areas lack real management skills yet are allowed to continue to under-perform
Decisions are often made to ignore issues vs confronting and solving them

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do a reality check with mid managers and clean house of under performers

I have been working at Tidewater Community College full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Provides a great environment to learn new skills and develop your career. Plenty of opportunity to move up. Both of these, however, depend a good deal on which department you work for.

    Cons

The previous President cursed at and belittled those who worked for her and as a result (in my opinion) many of the executives kept their heads low and took little initiative and provided even less focus. The new president and several new VPs and Associate VPs are bringing new life, but they are also fighting against the old ways.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take initiative, provide focus to your people, and be willing to embrace new ideas or get out of the way.

    Pros

I got a chance to really teach and engage my students.

    Cons

The administration was not very supportive. I never saw my department chairman.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more supportive of your adjuncts and stop listening to hastily written complaints from elementary minded students.
