Pros
The benefits are great at Time. If you have children they make it very easy to work from home or provide onsite care.
Cons
The compensation isn't that great in comparison to other companies. Also there isn't a lot of room for growth within some of the departments.
Advice to Senior Management
Take a look at the overall structure of some of the departments. Make sure that available jobs always make it to the internal site so that everyone has a chance at applying for the position as an internal hire.
Pros
Great benefits, competitive salary, great magazines.
Cons
You can't have a life outside of work if you want to move up the ranks. Expect to work 60+ hours with no overtime or appreciation. It's simply expected. Limited diversity at the top.
Advice to Senior Management
More life/work balance is needed.
Pros
The people are very friendly and intelligent. There is a strong sense of collegiality. Senior managment for the most part are strong communicators who can inspire people around them.
Cons
The recent economic issues have wrecked havoc on advertising sales which has typcially brought in a substantial part of the companies profits. This has resulted in much tightening of the belts and layoffs etc...
Advice to Senior Management
After a certain level, career grwoth for certain specialist functions is limited. There is really no where to go for more growth or responsibility except to leave the company for other opportunities or wait for the other members in your group to attrite.
Pros
Benefits package to employees. Believes in investing in brands by holding events, seminars etc. Wellness and tuition reimbursement. There is a believe in work/life balance.
Cons
Top-heavy. Be prepared to have much meddling in the making of your magazine from the executive suite in New York. Too many layers at the top directed by people who aren't familiar with the brand nor magazine making since the 1980s. A little less modern. More stuffy than many media companies.
Advice to Senior Management
In today's times, it would be nice to have a method for creatives to submit ideas for new business models etc. If magazines are going to share resources, there needs to be systems in place. Please look at the executive level and the multiple layers to get the job done. It makes the work tedius, uncreative, homogenous and demotivating.
Pros
Time Inc. give lots of vacation time and is full of interesting people to help broaden your horizons. This is a media giant so if you want to work in the publishing industry, it's great to have some of their bigger brands on your resume. Large amount of discounts at the ready. Free magazines.
Cons
Even though you get loads of vacation time, it's hard to take it because of all the work that you are likely to be responsible for. You really have to speak up for yourself and protect your life, because Time Inc. will take whatever amount of your life you are wiling to give. And if you are the quiet type, forget about it...your work - no matter how good, won't speak for itself - this is true many places anyway. But if you are not gregarious, you will likely be a bit of a pariah at Time.
Advice to Senior Management
Somehow find a way to strike a balance between the endless quest to deliver shareholder growth every year and the amount of squeezing you do on the employees who are left after all the layoffs.
Pros
The benefits are only decent. Keep in mind this is a large company so although the benefits are good, you are a small fish.
Cons
Management is not scrutinized as well as it should be. Mailings are sent out every now and then about how great the company is doing, but whenever it's time for raises you will never see a dime.
Advice to Senior Management
The money is very top heavy. There is no desire to instill loyalty with their employees. As a result everyone is always looking or a better job.
Pros
Very large company so the benefits are great. Lots of perks such as discounts, etc. Time Inc. University is a very cool idea - classes and lectures given by top people at the company. I learned a lot by attending.
Cons
Very large company so it can be hard to navigate at first. Once you get the hang of it though, it's a nice place to work.
Advice to Senior Management
Enjoyed my time here and I really liked the Time Inc. University - keep it up!
Pros
It's a great place to work in an awesome location, 58th and 8th in Manhattan. The building is brand new and the cafeteria is amazing as far as work cafeterias go. Great name recognition around the world. Proud to work here.
Cons
I feel like there are not enough events planned for New York Employees. The headquarters in Atlanta seems to get most of it. The security staff either needs to be paid more or trained more. They seem to lack enthusiasm for their jobs.
Advice to Senior Management
Also would be better if the yearly employee assessments were conducted by HR instead of division managers just to keep it more impartial.
Pros
They provide a steady paycheck in a down economy. They also have benefits. They train anyone to do the job.
Cons
consistently ignores employee feedback which management asked for. Consistently ignores customer feedback. Consistently failing to think projects through in an appropriate manner (IE. the failure to forsee issues with poorly planned projects).
Advice to Senior Management
Try listening to employees, all the management seems to be self concerned. They refuse to listen to the mandatory surveys regarding them selves, and listen even less to the ones employees leave.
Pros
Its a major media company and looks good for your resume. If you live in NYC, it provides an easy commute. Time hires very bright individuals
Cons
While hiring people mostly from name brand schools, many individuals are not in a position to fully contribute due to a highly political and competitive environment. work/life balance is poor and if you drop out of the "in" crowd, your voice becomes invisible - even if you put forth good ideas.
Management does not communicate well to the masses.
Advice to Senior Management
none.
