    Pros

Great feedback from coworkers and supervisors. Encouragement to take your time and excel in everything you do. Supervisors ensure employees -- especially interns -- get a chance to try different jobs.

    Cons

Roanoke is in a very conservative part of the country. There's still a lot of prejudice in the city and surrounding area.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you do! Never forget that the reason your paper is so fantastic is because you have great people working for you, and keep treating them like you value them.

    Pros

The Roanoke Times is a great place to develop as a young reporter. You're surrounded by people who are committed and competent and generally respect and like one another.

    Cons

The pay isn't great. Cutbacks in staff and a lack of a sense of real direction from senior management has damaged morale to some degree. But my guess is these problems plague a lot of companies in this industry today.

    Advice to Management

Increase pay and staff in the newsroom. Take the time to develop a clear, long-term goal for the type of paper you want to be going forward and stick to it rather than chasing a new fad or market each year.
