I work as math tutor at an after school program that runs two days a week, and is aimed at grade 9 and 10 students.

Math Teacher (Current Employee)
Toronto, ON (Canada)

I have been working at Toronto District School Board part-time for more than 3 years

ProsGood pay, can be rewarding if your interested in teaching. This is an ideal job for any college student in STEM field who can communicate well.

ConsIf you don't live in the east end near Danforth Collegiate, the only school that I am aware of that has this program, it may take a while to get there, and it only runs two hours for each session twice a week. This program is run by teachers who are disorganized at times so payroll is fairly inconsistent.

An amazing place to Work! The TDSB is a great place to work if you are in interested in teaching!

Data Entry/ESL Assessment (Former Employee)
Toronto, ON (Canada)

I worked at Toronto District School Board as a contractor for less than a year

ProsGreat benefits and pay, laid back atmosphere for the most part yet plenty of opportunities to contribute if your more of the A type personality! Able to make a positive impact on the community.

ConsA little behind technologically. Apart from that, there really aren't any other cons I can think of. Some of the building are kind of old, but that can be nice sometimes!

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Occasional (supply) Teacher - Good Employer

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Toronto District School Board

ProsLarge school board = plenty of opportunity to find supply work in the area of your choice, barring that you have strong classroom management skills

ConsUnfortunate that your pay as a supply teacher reaches its maximum after working 200 full days, that is, won't make a difference 20 years later...your daily rate is stilted forever, except for incremental raises = about $235 currently.

Advice to Senior ManagementPay supply teachers according to performance...

Disorganized, Inept Leadership

Teacher, Secondary (Current Employee)
Toronto, ON (Canada)

I have been working at Toronto District School Board as a contractor for more than a year

Pros- Union-devised sick scheme
- Time off (work/life balance)
- Diversity of job opportunities
- Working with some of the most delightful teens on the planet!!

Cons- low skilled management
- disorganized -- HR, Planning, everything!
- appears to be a massive mechanism running on its own steam with no brain or logic.
- Huge sense of entitlement by all aboard ... disgusting and leads to bad decisions and bad promoting.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire people with proper skill and demonstrated ability.
End your quoto scheme for management hires (you know what I am talking about)
Realize that all you are is a corporation and you are no bigger than an individual employee. If it weren't for us, you wouldn't be in business. Just because you are an education scheme doesn't mean that you are simply 'entitled' to good help (teachers). We have needs too and us new hires deserve more consideration and respect than we get.
- Your 'new mentoring scheme' sucks. Isn't properly supervised by management, ill-qualified teachers seem to volunteer for the gig -- giving NO support to the new teacher (my experience at least).

Teacher not it's all cracked up to be

Teacher, Secondary (Current Employee)

I have been working at Toronto District School Board full-time for more than a year

Pros-Experience depends on work environment and leadership personality
-students
-some parent support

Cons-Experience depends on work environment and leadership personality
-A lot of expectations and little direction for first year teachers
-The job becomes your life, family members try to help out so you don't sink
-public perception of teachers duties very negative and infact many people burn out their first few years because the amount of work and lack of respect for what is done by many individuals
-pay is not as much as the public believes
-going to the washroom, eating lunch or any time to recover during the day is almost impossible
(lunch and afer school meetings and all the work that goes into planning for the students and then actual teaching and all the extra like trips , admin./paper work)
-very little resources and out of pocket most of the time to buy for classrooms
-expected to wear so many different hats and sometimes not backed up by management
-sometimes micromanaged
-comp. bwtn other teachers to stand out: opportunites for advancement minimal unless you know someone
-higher ups are usually male
