I have been working at Toronto Research Chemicals full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    - great co-workers that are very knowledgeable in chemistry
    - flexible work hours
    - fairly stable employment

    Cons

    - issues with communication between management and chemists. When things go wrong, all the blame is placed on the worker. Many times information is just not passed down the chain to the chemist.
    - unprofessional and disrespectful management
    - motivation by management is through fear, hard work is not rewarded
    - there is no yearly review system in place to evaluate employees
    - working temperatures can be extreme (15 degrees C to over 30 degrees C)
    - most labs have poor ventilation
    - safety does not seem to be important to the company, no protocol for handling accidents that occur (ie. chemical spills), unsafe storage of solvents
    - low moral among chemists, not very many employees are happy working here
    - chemist have no access to literature. learning new chemistry is not something that is promoted
    - there is very little room to advance in the company

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - place some trust in the employee to do their job
    - information needs to reach the employee, proper communication needed
    - encouragement would be a better way to motive employees

I have been working at Toronto Research Chemicals full-time

    Pros

Employees are great people to work with who are highly qualified with phds and post-doc.

    Cons

No management certifications of any department manager. They are pretty much people who worked there for longer and who are native speakers of english. People who actually work are over-worked and people who don't work are NOT reprimanded. Upper management includes pretty much highly unprofessional people whom constantly uses coarse language towards others. Operation system is highly disorganized and there is no training given to most employees...its pretty much a sink or swim situation.

I have been working at Toronto Research Chemicals full-time

    Pros

flexible hours, not very stressful. hires immigrants that otherwise may not have jobs.

    Cons

lack of comunication between management and employees and between other employees also. extreme temperatures in labs from 15 to 38 degrees from winter to summer, makes chemistry difficult. poor ventilation. no vision benefits, no long term disability. motivation is through fear. smeely locker rooms.
