You are a "temp" , and they only hire the unemployed.

I have been working at Towers Watson as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

VERY easy to get hired. If you have a Health and Life license and can breathe, you are hired. They hire approximately 1,500 people in August and lay 95% off in December.

    Cons

I have been with Extend Health, now Towers Watson One Exchange for 3 seasons. It amazes me that Towers Watson professes to be a company that is always striving to improve "employee engagement" and they consult with their clients on how to improve "employee engagement", yet they have a company like ours where they hire thousands of "temps" each year with no intention of offering people full time positions.

It is EXTREMELY easy to be hired at Extend Health. You merely need to pass the insurance exam, if you have not already, and you need to be unemployed. I say Unemployed, because who in their right mind would leave a permanent position to become a "temp" at One Exchange. So please consider while there are many professionals who are unemployed, there are also people who are unemployed for a reason. So hiring only from the "unemployed" pool puts you at a disadvantage from the get go.

They spend SO much money on training. It really boggles my mind that it could cost less money to fire and rehire and retrain people every year than it would cost to keep people, invest in them, and develop them into top performers.
    Advice to Management
Hire your people. Quit SAYING they are valued and SHOW them they are valued.

    Pros

    Pay, hours and some employees

    Cons

Wish it wasn't a temp position

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire more people, especially young college graduates. We may not all have the work experience, but we're tech savy people.

I have been working at Towers Watson full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    Great people, really friendly environment.
Very interesting work, truly at the cutting edge for the field.
Tremendous learning opportunities in HR, but applicable any job or career
You get exposed to clients very early on, but with good guidance and feedback from managers.
Busy, but flexible hours, not unreasonable deadlines.
Good opportunities for growth, development, and promotion.
    Growing firm, great job stability.

    Cons

    Mediocre pay and health benefits.
    Technology is awful.
Senior consultants often don't push back, leading to sometime unreasonable assignments and tight budgets.
Niche market means less exit opportunities. Sometimes, getting promoted from really seems like the best/only way to go.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Excellent culture of feedback and development.
Invest in some new, more efficient technology and more robust benefits.

Unfortunately the company location in Pittsburgh, hiring process unorganized, not professional. Lack of training skills.

I worked at Towers Watson full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Companys potential-skys the limit. The pay good for the position.

    Cons

Training lacked the essential direction for the job functions. Anyone can read from slides, takes trainer interaction with new hires along with system practice. Either you got the skill set for CSR or not. Training should be more on systems toggling again with practice, worksheets or at least the opportunity to take proper notes. Not enough valuable time learning the clients needs. And most importantly, ,,, a company should not let one person with only ONE year of customer service experience EVER make most important decisions, ,, especially with the maturity level of a high school student. Presentation of your company is set in the attitude of your leaders regardless if they are lowest level management meaning a team lead.

I have been working at Towers Watson full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

In theory, the company's org structure allows its employees to be exposed to other projects if they are considering pursuing their careers with other departments.

Generous time off; benefits are ok, not too impressive.

Tuition reimbursement (depends on your manager's approval)

Opportunities to work from home for some

Good work-life balance (depends on your role though)

    Cons

Company sends good messages to its employees (for example that it supports their professional development), but in reality it all comes down to who your manager is. Unfortunately some employees are too much at mercy of their supervisors, and the senior management doesn't do anything about it. Not surprising that a lot of talented people left recently.

    Salaries are not overly generous.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Company should implement 360 reviews. Currently performance reviews are top-down or horizontal. I strongly believe that employees should have ability to review their managers as well, and feel safe about it.

C-suite executives should be aware about what happens below the level of their direct reports.
