    I worked at Towson University

    Pros

Helping to educate students, a wide network with access to multiple multiple facets of business, research and development resources in many fields are available.

    Cons

State-funded organization leads to disparity between needs and properly allocated resources. Very bureaucratic environment. Lots of barriers between departments.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A university and the departments within should develop a culture of mutual contribution to the well-being and education of the students. Be a resource to to business if you work in theater. Be a resource to nursing if you work in business, etc.

I have been working at Towson University full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

University environment, which includes a lot of "perks" such as sporting events, opportunities to hear speakers etc. If you get a regular position the benefits are great. Regular positions are hard to come by because of the state's hiring freeze. I am contractual, which excludes many of the great state benefits.

    Cons

It's very layered, and there isn't a lot of communication from the top. There are tensions between the administration side and academic side of things. Pay is also an issue, lots of people who love their work and department have left for other University's simply because the pay at Towson was poor.

I have been working at Towson University part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

friendly and supportive people, dedicated employees, stress levels were reasonable, you really feel as if people care about you here

    Cons

part-time contractual positions have little to no benefits, if you do not have a phD and you would like to teach it is not the place to work, high turnover in some departments

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure all of your employees receive adequate benefits for their work, make sure you allow those who work 12 months to take days off and vacation time throughout the year.

I worked at Towson University as a contractor (more than a year)

    Pros

Working for Housing and Residence Life can be fun for those who enjoy working with students, especially the main clients are from the freshmen and sophomores of the school. You help those students grow to transition to maturity and being professional, and that is making a difference.

    Cons

Bureaucracy and power politics made HRL department a place in which you have to withhold many of your characteristics, and may not to be the level you feel comfortable or to be confident to claim as "being professional".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you have some people in the mid- to high level supervising and is heavy-handed in supervising student leaders, it may be very hard to change the hypocrisy in the department.
