The most backward place. But you learn a lot on cars

Toyota Worker (Current Employee) Portland, OR

Prosbenefits and working with different people learning their cultures.

ConsTo many managers telling people to do different thing at once. Which makes no sense. To many chief and not enough cooks.

Advice to Senior ManagementThey need to go back to school to learn to run the place better. Their just a few that know how to get people moving and keeping professional.

An okay place to learn the auto industry while surrounded by dumb people

    Manager (Former Employee)

ProsIntriguing corporate culture has a lot to teach the world about planning and achieving a plan. The Toyota Way is a very valuable process

ConsYou could learn the Toyota Way in a case study at business school. Most of the day-to-day work is mind-numbingly boring.

Advice to Senior ManagementBring the Toyota Way into the 21st century- focus on delegating authority and reducing the number of layers of management

ProsToyotas are too reliable, so there was never any issue with them, so my job was easy, just bag and tag away

ConsThe summer heat and the oil stains that got on my uniform, and working with redneck techs

Have worked at Toyota for over 25 years and have truly enjoyed being part of the Toyota Family.

Senior Business Analyst (Current Employee) Torrance, CA

ProsToyota values it's associates and has a portfolio of benefits that are quite astounding, from an excellent lease program to health and wellness benefits.

ConsSalaries are not competitive. Career development and advancement is not optimal. Toyota is very slow to move when it comes to innovation and creating workforce flexibility.

Advice to Senior ManagementPractice what you preach - the Toyota Way is not just words on a page, it is a system of beliefs that must drive all behavior. Sitting in your offices with your doors closed does not promote respect for people or continuous improvement.

If you're an intelligent, strong willed women, this isn't the company for you.

District Service & Parts Manager (Former Employee) Irvine, CA

ProsStability would be the number one reason to want to work at Toyota. It is very difficult to be fired or laid off, regardless of your experience or contribution.

ConsThe pay is not competitive with the same jobs at other automotive companies. Also, if you are interested in "pay for porformance", then you shouldn't work here.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou should pay closer attention to those that are going against the grain. It could be a major positive for your company. You need more forward thinkers at Toyota. You have too much of the same.

Slow career progress but great people and product

    District Manager (Current Employee)

ProsPension, good 401k, lifetime employment (if desired), solid health insurance (but it has declined in recent years), demo vehicles for certain positions.

You can learn a lot about wholesale and dealer operations. The internal support staff employees are awesome people and generally helpfully. Colleauges are very personable, team oriented and there is little fear of backstabbing for the next promotion.

Toyota generally has respect for people and trusts its associates.

ConsPay is not that great for high travel jobs; similar roles in other industries are probably paid 20-100% higher.

Too many people clogging the system (see lifetime employment), upward movement only happens from attrition and rarely from newly created positions. Cream of the crop talent doesn't rise to the top, they leave and then those roles are filled by tenure not aptitude.

Philosophical and communication disconnects between the field offices and TMS (Headquarters).

TMS upper management is not very dynamic or progressive and very reactionary; hopefully the Japanese don't give them too much control because I don't trust they are innovative or can lead the brand into new avenues that the future will necessitate.

Advice to Senior ManagementHope is not a strategy. If you can't find a way to promote young talent, they will leave. They might end up at competitors that offer faster advancement and take the knowledge learned at Toyota and apply it in an organization open to new ideas and innovation.

    Great company, no benefits.

    Valet (Current Employee) Hollywood, FL

ProsEasy, idiot-proof, the time goes by fast.

ConsNo benefits, subcontracted company so you file your own taxes. Bogus.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeeping the service department more tidy.

Team Member (Current Employee) Blue Springs, MS

ProsPay is on par with area plant is located. Not great, but not below other manufacturing plants in the area.

ConsMiddle management is HORRENDOUS!!!!! Lot of Texas group leaders who came to MS treating people as if we had just crossed the border from Mexico. Promotions are very political and are not based on knowledge or seniority. Who you befriend of kiss up to is how you are promoted. Not really a union person, but a union is definitely needed as soon as possible before any more growth is done.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake care of the people and they will take care of Toyota.
