Not the best place for an IT Manager, good place to work for a while though.

    Pros

Company staying private so it avoids some of the stock market pressure.
Well known global company giving you exposure to all facets of retail.
While Jerry Storch was there, there was a great amount of direction, focus, and feedback given to everyone.

    Cons

Constant oursourcing of IT people to the point that all of the subject matter experts are non existent.
Company does not seem to value IT, only sees it as an expense.
Upper management is very critical of IT and focuses more on reporting and governance than actually building and maintaining high quality systems.
They preach Frugal not Cheap, but the decisions are always the other way around.
Long hours and not a lot of appreciation.
No places to grow as a career and opportunities seem to be given to the more popular or loudest and definitely not the top talent. Company loses top talent due to poor work/life balance (which used to be great) and not taking initiative to promote quality employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hold more IT people on staff, outsourcing is killing the company's ability to act quickly and build high quality systems. Don't be so cheap with what systems to centralize on or upgrade.
Relax on hammering employees and managers through the change management process, you should realize it's a guide, not the end of the world.
Reach out and promote high quality employees before they leave, waiting for people to speak up leads to promoting only the squeaky wheel and promotion of favorites rather than the best people for the job.

    Pros

Flexible hours, co-workers, active work, can test your multi-tasking abilities. You get to meet a lot of new people, good or bad!

    Cons

As with most retail jobs, pay is sub-par but it is balanced by the flexibility if you need it

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More training for up and coming employees that have potential to be leaders

I have been working at Toys ''R'' Us full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Good salary and benefits. IT department has interesting projects and a friendly environment. Management is generally fair to employees. Beautiful corporate campus in the woods, with wildlife frequently visible.

    Cons

Company's financial situation is not ideal, due to long-term debt and the general decline of brick-and-mortar retail. Employees are well-compensated but increasingly asked to "do more with less".

I worked at Toys ''R'' Us full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

    Many nice and talented people
    Lovely campus

    Cons

Management rules like the queen of hearts and many joke about drinking the Kool Aid
The private ownership does not care about the business, and definitely has no heart when it comes to employees. If you are not a heartless tiger you will not advance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get back to caring about the company and industry, and not just your golden parachutes.

I have been working at Toys ''R'' Us full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great company, toys and babies all of the time! Good people and friendly culture, mostly good HR policies. Some good strategy. Nice campus and corporate office, decent compensation.

    Cons

Executive leadership issues where they don't let their experts do their jobs and make decisions, and they don't stay with one strategy long enough. Too many VPs and money spent at the HQ, need to invest more money on the stores, some of which are very ratty! Top management expects way too many hours out of people at all levels, weird kind of martyr-like culture where even the hard workers feel guilty leaving on time. Inconsistent performance standards across departments. Some top level management allow very lame workers to stay employed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Practice what you preach. If you care about families & kids, then make sure your own employees really have a work-life balance. Let the experts do their jobs, stop letting VPs make decisions that are not their area of expertise, or that lower level people should make.

Former Employee - Anonymous in Wayne, NJ

I worked at Toys ''R'' Us as a contractor for more than a year

    Pros

    -Fun atmosphere
-If you're a temp you don't have to participate in Black Friday and will most likely have the day off.

    Cons

    - If you're a temp you will be treated like scum of the earth
    - You'll never be hired to perm if you are a temp, even if they promise you will be someday
    - They blow smoke up your bum just to keep you on just to end your contract sooner than expected
    - They seem like they care about each other but in reality everyone is after everyone else's job
    - Massive layoffs every few years, brings down morale

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The CEO is making changes that will run TRU into the ground. Leave while you still can. In 10 years there will be no such thing as a Toys R Us. Amazon will take over.
