Summer Student: Wonderful experience, technical skills developed.

Summer Student (Current Employee)
Calgary, AB (Canada)

I have been working at TransCanada as an intern for less than a year

ProsExcuse the point form: High degree of operational latitude (freedom from micromanagement). Flexible hours. Decent pay (for a summer student position). Was given interesting work which taught me valuable technical skills. Was fully utilized. Was given a surprising amount of responsibility given my position as an intern. Donuts on Friday.

ConsPrinters are bad. Air conditions seems to have a mind of its own. Wifi is pretty sketchy. Was only given a single, small monitor.

Balanced amount of work, and opportunity for growth and challenge with a great family benefit package.

IT Manager (Former Employee)
Calgary, AB (Canada)

I worked at TransCanada full-time for more than a year

Pros- mostly, Well vetted, hard working supervisors
- very stable company
- well maintained work spaces
- good mix of co-workers

Cons- occasional poor supervisor - almost impossible to transfer out of their team if the poor supervisor wants to keep you.
- while promotions offer significant pay raises, pay raises within an existing pay-bracket are by very small increments.

Advice to Senior Management- focus more on keeping existing talented people rather than recruiting from outside.

Great for people just looking for a well paid easy 9 to 5.....

Accountant Level II (Former Employee)
Calgary, AB (Canada)

I worked at TransCanada full-time for more than 3 years

Pros- Great compensation - 10% bonus every year, additional 10% after 3 years (more depending on job). $750 fitness allowance, 5% RRSP contribution every year.
- 12 flex days, option to buy more.
- Great work life balance
- One of the only companies left with defined benefits
- Lot's of all-you-can-drink parties and team building events!

Cons- Large organization dynamics - rigid corporate structure, slow and steady career/pay progression, narrow job roles with little crossover, lot's of disgruntled employees and petty office politics, 9 out of 10 people were lazy, spoiled, whiners...

- The only people that seemed to have any career satisfaction were those that made it to management.

- Experience will definitely suffer here. I met lot's of people doing the same boring job for years and years, would not recommend for ambitious, hardworking individuals, that want a fast paced dynamic career. TC will suck the life out of you.

Advice to Senior ManagementHa! Why would Management change anything?! Everything that is wrong with TC is to their benefit. They get to do all the cool stuff nobody else gets to do and get paid astronomically more money to boot. Keep licking your greasy fingers!

Growing Company and good money to be made

Integrity EIT (Current Employee)
Calgary, AB (Canada)

I have been working at TransCanada as a contractor for less than a year

ProsLots of meaningful work...no shortage of work

Consdata systems are going through a change and creating confusion and back log. Hiring many ppl who dont know pipe and so have to deal with differeing backgrounds and differering cultures and sometimes...incompetence.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement is old school, rwetire already and bring younger ppl to be part of the 'Leadership Team'

Great place to start, lots of opportunities to grow in pipelines

Developer (Former Employee)
Calgary, AB (Canada)

I worked at TransCanada as a contractor for more than a year

ProsFriendly co-workers and management. Many resources to learn from.

ConsPigeon-holed into one job description. Hard to get out without certain certifications.

Advice to Senior ManagementWhile certifications weed out employees that are not qualified for the tasks, being too specific can weed out employees that are. For example, a computer science graduate is just as qualified as a software engineer in programming and development, but because they don't have the "engineering" title, they won't be considered by TransCanada for a developer position. It's a shame because TransCanada loses good temporary or contract employees that have been trained in TransCanada's procedures to new hires that have to be trained, but have the specific certification. Would save TransCanada a lot more time and money if they eased up on their certification process.

Good but short so limited review

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Calgary, AB (Canada)

I worked at TransCanada full-time for less than a year

ProsOne good thing is that tcpl is one of the dew companies that still offers a Defined benefit plan, even though it still takes at least ywo years to be vested. They provide an environment that strives for engagement and community outreach

ConsNo gym
Avg pay for large company in energy sector

Advice to Senior Managementinvest more in proper training and employees will feel more confident in their roles
