Current Employee – been working at TransCanada full-time for less than a year
Pros – A great company headed in a great direction. Overall just NICE people to work with -- people will take time to help you, and the politics are kept to a minimum. A rarity among companies today, and quite refreshing from most of the jobs I've held. Salary and benefits are terrific. The salary is very competitive, but so is getting a job here -- they want good candidates and they want to keep their employees. The health benefits are top notch. Retirement benefits are also the best of any company I've ever worked for. I put 5% of my salary into my 401K, and they match that entire 5% PLUS add another 7%. So that's 17% going into my retirement account, and I only had to put in 5% of it. Immediate vesting. Pretty nice! They also have a pension option in lieu of the extra 7% 401k contribution.
Cons – Thus far I personally have not found any cons, although I have only worked here for a few months. However, I work on the US side, and I do hear rumblings from some of my colleagues that the Canada side sometimes does not fully understand the needs of the US side. Since the decisions are made in Canada (Calgargy headquarters), I suppose sometimes that could translate into an issue.
Advice to Senior Management – None that I can think of

Current Employee – been working at TransCanada full-time for more than 7 years
Pros – decent pay, good benefits, nice office
Cons – work load! constant management changes, work load, middle management that really knows little about what they are managing. Not nearly enough field employees. work load.
Advice to Senior Management – We seem to have plenty vice presidents and directors, but not enough people that actually do the work. Don't have salary ranges and then only "allow" people to get to the middle of them and no higher.

Current Employee – been working at TransCanada full-time for more than 7 years
Pros – Great benefits, great work & life balance, and good people to work with
Cons – Promotion is not based on performance, rather seniority. Pay is not tied to performance. Unnecessary need to use team leads that adds another layer to business processes. No minority member of the executive leadership team, not even in the Director position, VP, Senior VPs, or Executive Leadership Team (it's still a white man's world at TransCanada).
Advice to Senior Management – Eliminate team leads, we're are all professionals and not high school student at a grocery store that needs someone to push us around and monitor our actions. Delegate and people will more than deliver. Hire or promote a minority member to the executive leadership team. Tie pay and promotion to performance not Seniority.

Former Employee – worked at TransCanada full-time for less than a year
Pros – Their pay is great, nice offices, vision for the future of the company is promising. Benefits are also really good.
Cons – Poor management, office atmosphere is stifling, management has clear favorites that they single out regularly and the rest are practically ignored. Those individuals new to management have no idea what they are doing, how to lead and also can be seen simply relying on their favorites to carry the workload and then use the favorite to delegate work to others, even though that favorite should not be doing so.
Advice to Senior Management – Better train your management in the Houston office. Work on your office culture in the Houston office. Encourage the management in the Houston office to stop the high turnover of the contractors. Just when a contractor is trained, they either leave or are let go. That is not productive and creates resentment in the office.

Former Employee – worked at TransCanada
Pros – Benefits are much better than most places, the more progressive Canadian policies are definitely in evidence.
Cons – Energy is in general is a male dominated industry. This was particularly true in the Portland office of TransCanada. Golfing was a favorite activity and women were rarely asked to participate in the golfing field trips that managers went on with their favorite staff.
Advice to Senior Management – Address equality and sensitivity issues more seriously

Former Employee – worked at TransCanada
Pros – Worked 6 days a week for 14 hours per day. Lots of money made in 3 months working on pipeline.
Cons – Safety issues were supposed to be important but when it came to the almighty dollar and finishing up in time - people took risks.

Former Employee – worked at TransCanada
Pros – Company with good benefits and compensation, generally good work environment, and healthy work/life balance.
Cons – As restructuring began, environment was less than nice. Took over a perfectally run subsidiary company and pretty much dissolved it and divested of the employees - many 35-40 years.
Advice to Senior Management – Worry less about location and more about performance of employees.

Current Employee – been working at TransCanada
Pros – Exceptional salary and benefits package, including generous bonus and restricted share unit program, pension, and 401k match. Excellent paid time off and work/life balance. Good business outlook and growing company.
Cons – In Portland, very limited career growth opportunity
Advice to Senior Management – Focus less on processes. Middle management seems to be obsessed with adding new processes and beauracracy to internal business processes. Some managers in IS need to be

Current Employee – been working at TransCanada
Pros – Pay, bonus, stock performance share units and days off are all at par or above those offered throughout the energy industry. Flex time allowing variable start and end of workday is a benefit. Tools provided in support of the job function are good.
Cons – Difficult to understand at times the desires of management and the measures they will use to evaluate performance. Personnel cutbacks have resulted in higher workload than normal and "burnout" is a possibility. Standards between Canadian and US based employees are not the same i.e. employees in Canada receive 7 more days off that in the US for identical service.
Advice to Senior Management – Improve communication. Work on standardizing work environment between all employees at all locations.
