I worked at TransCanada full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great benefits package with great stock purchase plan and pension.

    Cons

Management usually did not have people management skills. Poor Managers across the company that only care about their own compensation packages. I would not recommend this as a company to work for if you are looking to start your career. Salary is average and work demands are high. My manager, in particular, stole my work products and isolated me from the rest of the team and blocked me from any career development opportunities.

I worked at TransCanada full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good compensation, flexible benefits, vacation. There are possibilities to change careers without having to take a pay cut. Great colleagues.

    Cons

It's hard to get promoted. Not always the best in the industry practices. Too many new processes that are constantly created, but hard to follow and not standardized across the company.

    Advice to Management

Make processes simpler, but necessary to be followed by everyone. Less levels of management.

I worked at TransCanada full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Very environmentally and ethically focused company. It's size ensures plenty of opportunity to move around and grow into areas of interest.

    Cons

Regulatory approval process can drive unstable work environment for large projects. Staffing up for something that is anticipated to be approved can sometimes result in staff layoffs when the approval doesn't happen. It can be very demoralizing.

    Pros

    Cons

Depending the department you are, the opportunities to grow within it are very limited and managers tend to have favourite employees

I worked at TransCanada full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

-Excellent compensation/benefits package -Opportunities for training courses -Opportunities for advancement -I know some people who really truly love working there

    Cons

-Difficult on-boarding process for new employees; very little training received for your position -Lack of standardization of processes across business units, or even projects within the same unit -Unclear and undefined expectations -Managers are often too busy to provide support/guidance to their groups -My managers had no idea what I did and didn't seem to have a lot of respect for the role -Organizational structure changes a lot and continuity is lost -Expect to work a lot of overtime; the company talks a good talk about work/life balance, but the reality is very different -Nepotism runs rampant -Money is the bottom line

    Advice to Management

-Centralize the management of your personnel, especially in the service groups. It will give them the support they need and assist you in your efforts to standardize your processes across the projects -Provide training for your managers; some of them are trying their best, but could use assistance in how to manage people and the time in which to do it -Communicate to managers and employees that ACTUAL work/life balance is important; there shouldn't be an unspoken expectation that anyone should take their work phones with them on vacation -Please do something about the nepotism; people who are related in any way should not be working on the same project together. It undermines their credibility, the credibility of the company, and it can make for uncomfortable dynamics on the projects.

    Pros

Very good company, pays well. The people in this company are very professional and easy to get along with.

    Cons

Lots of paperwork, but that is part of the safety culture that has been implemented so deeply in to the company.
