I worked at Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen)

    Pros

Great cause, innovative biomedical research, amazingly talented researchers, outstanding support staff. The company has a profound effect on the community through educational outreach. Good benefits and employee enrichment programs.

    Cons

Independent labs make it difficult to glue the company together. Salaries and job security highly depend on the ability of individual reaserchers to raise funds (more like academia, not like industry).

    Pros

Every day, I learn something new about the human genome and how we are leveraging it to discover new diagnostics and treatments for the most serious diseases facing humanity. I am not a scientist, but I do feel that my work in support of this organization is helping our scientists make a difference. These are the smartest people in the room, and it is a thrill to come to work every day.

    Cons

Communication is something that we need to work out - both internally and externally. We tend to say "no" for a lot of people and make assumptions without really asking the right questions.

    Pros

TGen is committed to help those with rare genetic disorders/conditions and those with aggressive cancer. "We" all here at TGen, either you are a scientist or in the admin dept, are dedicated to help using NextGen Sequencing to fight cancer and/or genetic disorders with personalized medicine.

    Cons

On the research side, this is not a 9-5 hour job. Some protocols and equipment require to work longer days and even weekends.

    Advice to Management

Keep an "Open Door" office policy. Sometimes when working in the lab, planning to set a meeting is not always possible. Research is fluid and constant so dropping in for a quick chat is sometimes all that is needed to keep moving forward at the bench.
