I have been working at Travelers Companies full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Stable employment, good people, and low stress environment make for a good place to have a long career. Pressure to produce is low and it seems that standards are low.

    Cons

Travelers has the same problems as most big companies. When you are a star, it's hard to get outsize rewards and the company certainly keeps around too much dead weight.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer more constructive feedback. Even if it is critical.

I worked at Travelers Companies full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The people at Travelers are great. While I worked there I saw a lot of teaming to get the job done. The benefits are very good.

    Cons

Performance expectations are extremely high. It is almost impossible to get a promotion unless you are "married" to your job, unless you are liked by upper management. The workload is generally too much for one person to get the tasks accomplished in the time frames established by the company, especially if you are an hourly employee. The constant meetings do not help & the stress level among many employees is extremely high.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start giving yearly raises based on merit so that employees aren't wondering when & if they will get a raise. Hire more employees to spread the workload to a manageable level. Don't base staffing on what you think may happen next year. I've seen people released due to anticipated staffing needs & then called back months later. Lower your expectations of your people so that they can have a life outside work.

    Pros

Good culture, good people, strong company.

    Cons

Only a few bonuses given to small portion of consultants as opposed to each of the top performers receiving incremental amounts. Why the distrust with telecommuting? - just about every insurance company lets their consultants work from home.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't furlough based strictly on seniority, some of the hardest workers and the young energetic ones.

I have been working at Travelers Companies

    Pros

Increasing investment in drect is probably the right choice but upsetting their agency plant

    Cons

HR runs PL these days & the company currently takes stack ranking to the nth degree - very negative place to work in the past 2 years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Dial back the HR role

I have been working at Travelers Companies

    Pros

Travelers offers competitive pay and job security. Travelers is also a great place to work because of the people. It was rare, if it happened at all, that people lost their jobs at Travelers. Job security allows people to focus on their task rather than worry if they will be given a box and a pink slip.

    Cons

One downside is that Travelers will probably never be the forerunner of the insurance industry. Management heavy like most large companies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to have some cutbacks in your area.
