I have been working at Travelers Companies full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Travelers genuinely cares about it's employees and it shows in the daily interactions between team members of your team and other departments. Great benefits and growth potential.

    Cons

Not everyone is as satisfied and unfortunately that does transfer into their interactions with others on the team.

I have been working at Travelers Companies full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

If you are interested in knowing what the company is like just check out the investor profile on any finance website. They are a safe long term invest, or as I like to say, it's insurance and therefore a risk adverse company.

    Cons

There are very few growth opportunities and as an IT professional there is no room to work with any technology that has come out in the last 2 years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is a lot of talk in the organization about developing talent, but not a lot of action. Many of the senior level positions come from the outside. Consider hiring from the inside.

Travelers is a big company with adequate benefits

I worked at Travelers Companies full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

The benefits are adequate but you will be working for a large corporation. The corporation routinely has small layoffs (under the radar). If you work in an area that is having financial stresses you may be chopped no matter what your competence level. There are opportunities to move within the company but you will need to be politically savvy to take advantage of the opportunities.

    Cons

The office culture in some areas is definitely to work you to death. This place loves people who work nights and weekends to meet the promises made by management. Overworked people are rewarded with small raises and occasional bonuses but don't expect much unless you are connected politically to a management mentor. You need to have a good network to stay employed. travelers employs many H1B visa holders who will work for less, so you are always worried if your position will be replaced by a foreign worker.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is no old fashioned pension anymore, just a 401K match that maxs out at $6,000 per year and a small pension that is funded by Travelers. You won't get rich on the measly amount that the company contributes to this ridiculous pension, and you won't get health coverage either. Plan to put a lot into your own investments.

I worked at Travelers Companies full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Pretty decent salary and benefits package

    Cons

    Very poor PI leadership team.
There is a big difference between a manager and a leader, don't expext to find a leader in the PI finance department. Office culture is horrible, everyone is absolutely miserable and hate each other.
Mundane monotonous work. Management bullys you to see their point of view, some managers actually even bully their own boss and it works!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Managers need to know how to lead and motivate their team, be available to help their team and stop wasting time in meaningless meetings with HR.

I have been working at Travelers Companies full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Strong Company Financially, 40-50hr average work week. Solid pay for CT. If you enjoy sitting in front of Microsoft excel and looking at data and solving problems you will probably like this job.

    Cons

If you are a people person and you cant sit still this will be a problem.
Management doesn't invest in their employees development.
Mundane monotonous work , everything is data driven no room for creativity.
Management bullys you to see their point of view
If you don't like your job, Hartford is very boring and it will not compensate for putting up with the job.
Analyst do all the work while management makes all decisions, big company with big company politics
Boring and the work environment is very clichey

Lacks true leadership - "Lucky to have a job in this economy" constant message

I have been working at Travelers Companies full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Compensation decent, pension, 401k Match, Stock Grants, Bonus

    Cons

I personally observed numerous occasions where "friends" are pulled into the company and placed into positions they are not qualified to hold.
There is a difference between manager and leader - too many "leaders" focused on insignificant details.
    Lack of big picture leadership.
Leaders in IT who have never been involved in IT before, unable to understand the technology stack, unable to move the technology stack forward. Ancient technology in many areas of the company.
TOO much process. They add more and more process - It takes 3 weeks to get one line of code into a system for testing. If you enjoy programming, do not come here. There is a reason they pay multi-million dollar contracts to software vendors. We can't get the work done, leads to apathy and boredom.
Small to mid size projects last YEARS.
"You are lucky to have a job" message is constant.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider streamlining IT and bringing more onshore. You have created a monster with the offshore work, how can this possibly be more efficient and cost effective?
A few competent programmers, with less process, could easily do the work of 30 offshore programmers. You wouldn't know this though, would you? Since you have never wrote one line of code.

    Pros

Huge company with various opportunities for growth. Each department is like its own organization. People are nice, flexible culture, accepting towards family life balance.

    Cons

Very little focus on training and education of employees, raises are minimal, political organization - sometimes you need to be able to learn how to navigate politically to succeed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take more risks with high performing employees - let them think out of the box.
