    Pros

Lots of different areas to work in whether you're into marketing, finance, underwriting, operations, technology or event planning.

    Cons

Some areas of the company are a bit clicky, but then again, you're likely to find that anywhere.

    Pros

Leadership is supportive, training is excellent and simply the best people in the industry. You will be challenged to give more than 100%, but will be rewarded accordingly. If you are a coaster or union type person, this is not the culture for you. Pay for performance measures are fair.

    Cons

Health benefits are decreasing which is typical for all large corporations.

I have been working at Travelers Companies as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Great culture. Everybody is extremely helpful, and they do their best to make you feel comfortable. The work that is given to you is meaningful. The internship program in itself is great, as it provides you with mentoring as well as a many workshops, team building activities and networking opportunities with other interns. The paid housing is also a great benefit.

    Cons

Hartford is a mediocre city. Also, Travelers can be too conservative at times. As with any other big company, the sheer size of the organization can be overwhelming and can get in the way of getting things done.

    Pros

Stable financial results for the overall company.

    Cons

IT is split into silos for each line of business resulting in inefficiencies, conflicting priorities, and no enterprise strategic or tactical planning. Who-you-know is more important than what-you-accomplish.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have one CIO instead of six. Implement an enterprise VMO for Information Systems.

Stay away from Claims Customer Service (CCS)

I worked at Travelers Companies full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Excellent company overall; pay, benefits, culture, pto.

    Cons

Unit managers are self-centered, unqualified, and do not lead properly. No room for advancement within CCS. Bi-lingual candidates do not flourished within CCS due to the disadvantage of working regular and bilingual lines. They expect you to translate complex insurance claims without any formal training. No open door policy with unit managers; they are always secretly about everything.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Unit managers should hold B.S degrees. Bi-lingual claims customer service reps should have better training.

Former Employee - Insurance Operations Leadership Development Program in Hartford, CT
Former Employee - Insurance Operations Leadership Development Program in Hartford, CT

I worked at Travelers Companies as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

    --> Strong brand
--> Great leadership at the C-suite level
--> Numerous lateral opportunities across the enterprise
    --> Subsidized housing (summer internship)
--> Competitive salary (within insurance industry)
--> To advance, networking is a must

    Cons

--> Lackluster culture - conservative, outdated and very passive
--> Reactive business strategy - Travelers is not looking to "rattle the cage" or be innovative
--> Little collaboration between finance, operations, actuarial and underwriting business groups
--> To advance, networking is a must
--> Hartford is a very difficult place to live and Travelers offered little help in relocation process
--> Tendency to focus on "fluff" and volunteer committees versus measurable results

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

On the whole, the company needs to adopt a younger and more energetic culture. I understand that insurance is not a sexy industry, but Travelers can change that. If Travelers wants to attract interns and convert them into full-time hires they need to do more. I chose the neutral rating because the summer internship was in line my expectations. Though I enjoyed my summer with Travelers, I did not leave feeling excited or inclined to pursue a full-time offer with the company. Travelers' has a rich history and, in my opinion, one of the greatest CEOs in the world in Jay Fishman. I recommend the internship but I am hesitant to recommend a full-time commitment to the IOLDP. Notice that networking appears in both the pro and con section.
