Great collaborative culture. Lots of opportunity to move around the organization. Quite resistant to change, however.

I worked at Travelers Companies full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Travelers has a high performing culture that manages to stay very collaborative as opposed to adversarial. Depends on the manager obviously, but I noticed generally positive manger-employee relationships where everyone was respected and their opinions valued/considered.

Lateral movement seems to be supported and encouraged, so there's a lot of opportunity to try out different roles across the organization. If you're anywhere along the path of corporate leadership, you should expect to take on 2-3 lateral assignments before moving up in the organization.

I was part of a Leadership Development Program and those especially give you great exposure across the org and allow you to work on some cool projects. I highly recommend these programs to college grads.

Note: I left the organization to pursue a graduate degree.

    Cons

As with many big organizations, the place is very resistant to change. Innovation is often lost, never making it past the middle-management level. If new ideas do make the journey from individual contributor to senior management, they are often diluted and seen as too risky by management.

Also, though collaboration is a good thing, I noticed a few situations where a seemingly insignificant decision took several meetings worth of leadership discussion because no one would make a decision without consensus.

Finally, the organization is extremely siloed, and so redundancy and inefficiency runs rampant.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be a little more open to change. I get that an insurance company is risk averse. But to throw 100 lawyers at every business decision and have them take it apart and dilute it makes for an extremely slow moving organization that inevitably will fall behind those competitors who take risks.

    Pros

Use to be the people but this company is out of control. The pay was at one time very competitive.

    Cons

High turn over - driven away valuable people
Extremely stressful atmosphere, nothing done to change this.
Local management played games with people's careers.
Personal opinion was not valued at all.
One location had several employees walk out all on the same day.
Favoritism runs rampant and was unchecked.
HR was not interested in the personal well being of the employees.
Morale was non existent and had gotten worse over time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a long hard look at the local management.
Listen to the lower level employees, they do matter!

I have been working at Travelers Companies full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Nothing really people are not valued, compensation is at 2000 economy levels. Upper management are only those rewarded.

    Cons

People are not valued. Compensation isn't at economic values, job opportunities are only based in Hartford and they do little to help long term employees. On the job experience isn't considered a value. The place will suck the life out of people.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop taking what belongs to the employees that make it possible for you to get bonuses and raises which lower staff don't receive.

    Disapproves of CEO

    Pros

I met some really great people. Everyone is down-to-earth and can relate on a personal level. They take their work seriously but understand there are more important things in life other than insurance.

    Cons

Very difficult to get anything done, corporately. No bonus structure either. Bonuses are calculated by throwing darts on a wall, or if your manager and senior management really likes you. Even then, you wont' see more than $5k.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees and provide a structured bonus schedule/
