I worked at Travelers Companies full-time

    Pros

I had an opportunity to work with some of the brightest, supportive, most engaging people in my career. There was a genuine spirit of camaraderie that people only read about. The head of the department had some serious leadership issues; however, he was masterful at selling ideas and identifying talent. He did this better than anyone.

    Cons

Egotistical leadership and a bonus program that was arbitrary and capricious. There are no stated bonus target amounts and one year I got a nice bonus (but, in all honesty didn't feel my contributions warranted that much) and another year I got very little and my contributions were exceptional. Everything around salary and bonus is shrouded in mystery. If your boss likes you and is influential, you get a good bonus. Their "rating and ranking" system is beyond subjective.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

An employee survey might help uncover some issues that should be addressed. There hasn't been one, well, ever or at least as long as I was there--10 years. They need to come into the 21st Century around transparency of salary structure, bonus, and rationale for decisions around both.

Some leaders continue to be "protected" by more senior leaders even though they don't have the competence to lead others. This happens in most companies, but Travelers is very conservative in this regard. Honest, constructive feedback seems to dry up the further you are in the hierarchy.

I have been working at Travelers Companies full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Benefits start the first day. They occasionally provide breakfast and lunch for employees.

    Cons

Most managers have no idea what they are doing and are no assistance when help is needed. They play favorites and micromanage when they don't have anything better to do. People are fake. Stay away from the call center opportunities they offer. There is no room for growth or development as a person or an employee.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management should be more a part of the day to day. You would see how terrible things are. Dust, vacuum and steam clean your office occasionally. Get some ventilation. UPDATE your billing system. It's terrible. Get rid of that automated system or give customers the opportunity to get a call back. The open door policy is a locked door with a You're SOL slogan. Focus on people more rather than numbers. Employees are flocking out the door.

    Pros

Name recognition of the company. Excellent training. Co-workers were highly trained, experienced and loyal to company. Products were excellent but rarely priced competitively in the market.

    Cons

company direction at upper and regional level changed from year to year. company tended to rely on company name to bring in business when that is not enough these days in this competitive marketplace.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

if you are serious about growing customers, develop a plan and stick with it for longer than 9-12 months

    Pros

Travelers was very accommodating to my personal schedule. Dress was casual. My manager went above and beyond to help with my job and mentor me.
