I have been working at Travelers Companies full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Pay is above the industry average, Good health & Dental benefits, Flexible Hours, Onsite Fitness Center, Generous company match, Pension Plan (although I am not yet eligible)

    Cons

It's hard to get things done because of the size of the organization, things are not very organized. The company is overly focused on compliance which creates a lot of extra documentation work and a feeling that you are being watched. The company is focused on analytics and implements a number of tools that make it harder to get work done, and harder to do business with clients. Focused on doing more with less, resulting in a very heavy and stressful workload. Parking is expensive close to the building, long cold walks in the winter.

    Advice to Management

Keep it Simple. Be aware of the extra work you are creating with new procedures and tools for the job.

I worked at Travelers Companies full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Compensation/Benefits are great Historically employees remain with company for many years Diverse workforce Emphasis on volunteering - Company involvement in Socially Responsible volunteer opportunities

    Cons

No option for Account Managers to regularly work from home Baby Boomers are retiring at a very fast pace and their knowledge and experience is leaving with them. There is not enough emphasis on the value of the knowledge being passed down. Work culture and work/life balance is not consistent from one department to the next Limited advancement opportunities

    Advice to Management

Lead by example Promote Deserving Associates Be aware of the part you play in the success or failure of your employees Don't expect more from your employees than you are capable of giving/offering yourself. Learn to lead with influence and integrity

I have been working at Travelers Companies full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Excellent opportunity for advancement. Flexible hours, even given a computer to use at home. Very intelligent colleagues and managers.

    Cons

Perhaps too much work is available. Some units have difficulty maintaining its seasoned workforce. Too many meetings, which can be a distraction.

    Advice to Management

Be more willing to be honest with your employee's regarding the workload, especially because of the issue with maintaining good talent.

I have been working at Travelers Companies as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Lots of training and attention, really feel valued and the people are very nice. The twin cities are great

    Cons

The people here are very smart and that can get intimidating occasionally. But I would much rather work for intelligent people! They are selling their nice building

    Advice to Management

    Keep doing what you're doing!

I have been working at Travelers Companies full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I've worked at Travelers in various underwriting and management roles for more than a decade. If you are a strong professional and work hard you'll be amply rewarded in the form of development opportunities, career advancement opportunities, competitive compensation and benefits, and a good overall work environment. The company has a strong culture that promotes achievement but also integrity and humility, that those values are displayed pretty consistently by most of Travelers managers and leaders. It's also a well-run, profitable, stable, and conservative company that has a consistent organizational structure. There's no such thing as a sure bet, but Travelers is built to last.

    Cons

Some of the pros can also be cons to some degree. The conservative risk taking culture can sometimes cause Travelers to be less innovative or nimble than other firms. It can sometimes take years to accomplish or implement things that may take only months at a smaller company. But, often times that's for good reason. You may not have as favorable as experience if you don't exhibit some of the core attributes that Travelers values in its employees: - high caliber business acumen - hard working, high performing - collaborative, team-oriented, high emotional intelligence - ethical, consistently do what's right for the firm and for customers - loyal, as opposed to jumping around from company to company every few years

    Pros

Very nice people, always willing to help and explain the business. Worked 40 hours each week over the summer so work-life balance was great

    Cons

    None at all. Enjoyed internship

    Advice to Management

    Keep on keeping on.

I have been working at Travelers Companies full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Nothing really people are not valued, compensation is at 2000 economy levels. Upper management are only those rewarded.

    Cons

People are not valued. Compensation isn't at economic values, job opportunities are only based in Hartford and they do little to help long term employees. On the job experience isn't considered a value. The place will suck the life out of people.

    Advice to Management

Stop taking what belongs to the employees that make it possible for you to get bonuses and raises which lower staff don't receive.
