I have been working at Travelers Companies as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

Travelers was very accommodating to my personal schedule. Dress was casual. My manager went above and beyond to help with my job and mentor me.

    Cons

Travelers is a large company that isn't changing anytime soon. If you are looking for a company on the cutting edge of modern growth, this is not the company - or industry - for you.

I have been working at Travelers Companies full-time for more than a year

    Pros

My manager is pretty supportive of my work-life balance, however, I know that that varies from manager to manager within the organization. Many opportunities due to size of organization. I've met many manager that encourages their employees to move within the organization to a different area if it suited them better. Most people are very friendly and willing to help.

    Cons

Drink the kool-aid type of culture, lack in diversity (of thoughts and experiences), decisions are made up and then trickled down making it hard for change management, too conservative. Feelings of distrust that the employee is going to get to work done correctly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It can be difficult to make decisions with senior management always at the meetings. Put trust in your employees that they are going to get things done.

I have been working at Travelers Companies full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Many people willing to help and guide early on.
    Many social activities after work.
Very nice area in St. Paul

    Cons

There is a lot of heads down work during the day where many people are plugged in not really working together so it depends on your work style if you like that independent work or not.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Facilitate team oriented work

I worked at Travelers Companies full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Location was good. Could work from home if ill or sick child in some areas.

    Cons

Overall poor leadership skills, back stabbing, would throw employees "under the bus" , took credit for your work, constantly stressed, overworked, worked late hours b/c management would track who's online at 11:00 at night. Many folks seemed nervous, ill-at-ease, worried, stressed in general a bad environment that breeds bad behavior.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve team work and collaboration and work-life balance

    Pros

good question, nothing is good if you're a tenured employee.

    Cons

experience, knowledge and tenure no longer count as anything valuable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

appreciate the people who have committed most of their lives to this company and don't discount them as second hand citizens.

I have been working at Travelers Companies full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

    Industry-leading training program (UPDP)
    Many training and development opportunities
Does a great job moving people geographically or between divisions if/when the employee desires
Values the technical aspect of the work, not just financial results (i.e. not just writing new business)
Many formal diversity and volunteerism programs, employee clubs, etc.

    Cons

More rules and guidelines than some competitors, but usually for good reason

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Some nepotism is recognized by the general employee population, especially in the HQ location.

I have been working at Travelers Companies full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Good pay and benefits. You start out with 20 vacation days. Most (though not all) managers are supportive of the HR line on work/life balance. Upper management generally seems to make decisions thoughtfully and not change course overly frequently.

    Cons

Very corporate atmosphere. Any innovation or upgrade will take three times longer than it should, primarily because of an older workforce that doesn't adapt well. Technology is very dated (upgrade to Windows 7 came in 2013, prior to that everyone used XP).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Managing to the lowest common denominator leaves your best performers bored and underappreciated.

    Pros

Stable, well run company; Benefits; Day-to-day challenges; Great place to start career

    Cons

Much more process-oriented; Career plateau pretty quickly; Procedures emphasized more than outcome; HR has become the ruling force; Individual initiative not encouraged

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow more flexibility and freedom rather than rigid adherence to process; Encourage HR to act more like a partner rather than dictator

    Great summer internship experience.

Former Employee - Intern in Saint Paul, MN

I worked at Travelers Companies full-time for less than a year

    Pros

The IT Summer program is great, you really feel like part of a team and are exposed to good work. There are many opportunities for networking with other interns and full time employees. The pay is good and the employees are helpful and welcoming.

    Cons

Sometimes there were periods of no work and there wasn't any formal training so you're thrown in there and have to be ready to learn on the fly. There wasn't any sense of connection after it was over.

I have been working at Travelers Companies full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

    *Beautiful buildings
    *Nice Location
    *various job opportunities

    Cons

    *Culture is not very inclusive
*Top down management style is outdated, they have a vision but it doesn't include listening to employees
*workload allow very little seasonal work life balance

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees, many have not been in role under them in a long time, this is a huge, huge weakness, they make decisions based upon theories that need buy in by employees. At least in my unit, they don't get how to bring their employees together for a higher cause or to inspire.
