Pros
Very good work life balance, honest commitment to social responsibility, good industry and occasionally travel perks, some very talented people.
Cons
Complete lack of managerial courage at the VP level and above, not global, always aping what the competition does, continuous budget cuts due to poor financial performance.
Advice to Senior Management
Go global, there is a lot of money to be made in places like Brazil, Russia, India and China. There is a world outside Texas, folks.
Pros
Great work culture. In-fact parent company Sabre Holdings, is highly recognized as one of the great places to work in India. You get an opportunity to work with a very diversified group of people. People who have been travel agents to flight attendants to iPhone app developers to website designers. The floor is always open for new ideas, recommendations.. people are passionate about travel. People are proud about Travelocity brand. All this creates a high-energy level in the work place and also inspires you to pursue opportunities that match your interests.
Cons
There is not much career advancement or an accelerated growth. You do have promotions, recognitions, performance feedback like everywhere else..but if you are looking for fast-track career advancement, higher level of responsibilities, leadership grooming etc.. you may be a little disappointed. The overall growth-appetite of people is less when compared to other fast growing ecommerce companies.
Advice to Senior Management
You have a brand. You have a promise to keep. Don't ever lose that brand value. Downsize teams, Focus on doing cool, innovative things with 10 people where there are currently 100 not doing much. You have people who love the brand. You got to give them something new and worthwhile and not let them go!
Pros
Relaxed dress code. The company hires from within first. Good benefits. They do make an attempt to work with you to get time off.
Cons
Freeze on yearly raises. Job gets repetitive at times. Hard to kill the "down time" in between calls, since you you're not allowed to really search the internet or have electronic equipment. Shift bids, so your schedule can change pretty drastically. A lot of micro-managing from supervisors.
Advice to Senior Management
Return to the relaxed yet structured environment that Travelocity used to be so that you don't lose employees. Show employees how to better use the tools that are given to them.
Pros
It was not the most money I could have made at the time but was good money and I could take off whenever I wanted. The work was exciting for the first two years. I worked with a great team that was the best part of it.
Cons
Upper management was not very well organized. So it affect the projects you could do and the direction would change often
Advice to Senior Management
Make a decision in a timely manner and stick to it.
Pros
The executive leadership was quite passionate and engaged. You will learn a lot if you apply yourself. You will learn what to do and what not to do by observing behaviors. Many people wereThe work environment is casual. Customer satisfaction was the theme and the training, marketing, advertising, quality assurance and metrics supported the strategy. There was a lot of communication from certain members of management and In employee surveys on an annual basis. In employee engagement, Travelocity scored best in class in several departments.
Cons
Very long hours. Too many conference calls. Too much change and not enough communication to make people feel confident or buy in to the changes, especially in strategy. Too much group think and not very nimble in terms of making timely decisions that affect personnel, customers and the business in general. In company -wide employee surveys, only 32% of management felt comfortable taking risks. Human Resources had too much say and became a barrier and not thought of as very helpful. It took a long time to get things done. Every website enhancement /implenentation or change that was done there was usually flawed and never on time.Too much change in direction in terms of leadership - six Senior VP changes in seven years in one division, three different CEOs. Major layoffs almost every year, and because of it very stressful from October through December.
Advice to Senior Management
Trust your management team and give them the flexibility to make major decisions and take risks. It speaks volumes when almost 70% of the management team is afraid to take a risk.Get your entrepreneurial spirit back. Find a way to help employees balance work and living their lives.Have the managerial courage to do what is right for the business even when it is not popular and communicate the changes in an effective manner. Outsource your HR department. Most importantly, have the managerial courage and conviction to decrease the staff by performance management/termination versus annual layoffs. Hold employees especially leaders who are supposed to set the example accountable. Be more transparent and treat your employees more like valued partners. Happy employees make happy customers.Have a stratefgy and be more tactical and vigilant in achieving the mission.
