Pros
They offer media jobs and they're tougher and tougher to get.
Cons
Seem to have their head in the sand when it comes to changes in the industry caused by the emergence of new technologies.
Advice to Senior Management
Get your head out of the sand.
Pros
Flexible hours (sort of. Come in whenever you want)
Super casual dress code
Lots of technology
No real expectations on performance
Cons
Company still doesn't know what it wants to be
Lots of terrible management decisions to support employees
No idea of where they're going or how to get there
Advice to Senior Management
I think they just need to sit down and decide where they're going. And remove all the existing policies, procedures, etc. and start from scratch.
Pros
Very friendly and fun environment to work in. Tribune promotes creative and out of the box thinking so you have plenty of opportunity to learn new technologies and apply them given the project timeline permits
Cons
Constant change in organizational structure and direction is a bit daunting. The vision for success is constantly shifting with unreasonable deadlines put on the shoulders of engineers to deliver the vision without much vetting.
Pros
great place to work and learn the print media
Cons
reconstruction and laying off every department. Work more wity less.
Pros
Fast paced environment - friendly people
Historical and meaningful location to work with a miracle every day a paper is delivered
Cons
At times lack of visionary leadership and direction for the future.
The move to more generic news has diminished the space of local investigative reporting
Pros
I think the best reasons to work at Fox center on the people that work there. For the most part, people really work hard and want to do a good job as a service to the community. It's a nice facility and management understands the importance of family to it's employees. The former GM tried to communicate his vision for the station, but his vision was often muddled by the bankrupt parent company, Tribune.
Cons
The downside to Fox 59 is the parent company. They didn't seem to value the employees at any of their affiliates and bankruptcy cut out all chances for growth. Change was non-existent or ridiculously slowed by red tape. People there hadn't had raises for three years when I started and had no hope of getting one. It had a very negative effect on morale.
Advice to Senior Management
Get out of bankruptcy, pay your bills, and move forward to sell the stations to a group that can run them because you are sucking the life out of the very employees that want to make you great.
Pros
The Tribune Company has decent benefits and they offer competitive salaries. I also enjoyed very good work and life balance.
Cons
Tribune Company is currently going through bankruptcy. There have been several reductions in force since I've worked here, so most employees company-wide are afraid of losing their job.
On a local level, the approach to digital advertising, marketing, branding are extremely antiquated and traditional. As a result, they are always a few steps behind their competitors.
Advice to Senior Management
The way people interact with media has changed. Unless this organization hires leaders who truly embrace digital advertising, they will be in more trouble than they're already in.
Pros
Great job to have on your resume. People think you work in the coolest place. Then they find out it's a job like any other place.
Cons
Looks help in a media company not so much the individuals intelligence. More GOOD LOOKING than intelligent PEOPLE. Not had a raise in 3 years. Now job is being outsourced.
Advice to Senior Management
How but cutting a piece of the pie for your subordinates. Instead of saying how rough you have and getting great pay.
Pros
The Tribune Company has a tremendous influence in the media industry, therefore my writing and editing skills were truly put to use in a professional environment. I had the opportunity to constantly pitch new story ideas, and this practice was encouraged by my supervisor. It was extremely rewarding to see my articles published on major websites.
Cons
Beginning salary was kind of low, and expectations for completing projects in kind of intense considering the various responsibilities that a writer fulfills.
Advice to Senior Management
Management should always give writers positive reinforcement along with all other comments. This makes for a more positive, employee friendly work environment.
Pros
Young staff, cool people awesome building downtown
Cons
Pay is terrible, they add new markets which double and then triple your work, but they don't compensate you for it. Instruction is relayed from the top down to each level without ever asking what the people actually doing the work think.
Advice to Senior Management
Stop grading empployees based on 4 calls a month that require us to say certain things even if it has no relevance in the conversation taking place.
