Pros
The tribune company has a great atmosphere that is always moving and exciting. There is room for growth but you will have to work hard to move up at this company.
Cons
The internship pay is awful but you have to work very hard to make the connections that you want. In the world of journalism you have to be a go getter.
Advice to Senior Management
Great leadership throughout the company, advice for the management is to make sure the employees are happy to ensure better work.
Pros
Some of the Pros of working at Tribune Company were the prestige of working at a large, well-known company. Computers, software and equipment were newer, and kept up to date. The people I worked with directly were friendly, respectable and hard working. Management met with workers often to "pump up" the team and recognize achievement.
Cons
Some of the Cons of working at Tribune Company were the publicity of the company's problems. The company was in bankruptcy during most of the time I worked there. Pay raises had been placed on hold because of the bankruptcy. Top management changed often. There was a lot of pressure on employees to do the work of 2 people because of "right sizing" and lots of positions being eliminated.
Advice to Senior Management
Leadership was trying to make changes so that Tribune Company stayed competitive. The company should reward the hard work of its employees with raises across the board, rather than large bonuses for only the top level managers.
Pros
salary was decent, feedback from management was regular, expectations were clearly set - had young creative talent and a few seasoned professionals. lots of pressure but you were recognized if you did well
Cons
horrible management, not competitive in Dallas market, low morale, needs new technology, better trained staff, management needs training and perspective
Advice to Senior Management
Dallas is a big city by the time you get here you should know what you're doing. Trust professionals to do their jobs. Let the kids gain experience before putting them on air and know that humiliating people doesn't motivate them to perform.
Pros
A good place to say that you came from. Had the good sense to leave.
Cons
The GM is the only font of all good ideas
No respect for employees
GM has no respect for the locality
Station replaces local employees with out of towners and uses out of town electricians and venders when locals are available and have been working there for years. Is this a way for a local TV station to be run?
GM takes all credit for any ideas contributed by the employees
Good place for a union
Experience is a bad word here
Currently running a challenge for all local employers to hire just one employe while downsizing 2 dozen in the last couple of years.
Bankruptcy
While bankrupt they upgrade the facility to HD..go figure
Advice to Senior Management
just get out of bankruptcy already!!! Pay your bills!!!! Treat your people better!!!
Pros
truly trying to re-invent themselves
Cons
tough going thru the bankruptcy
Advice to Senior Management
keep the pressure on, to promote more change
Pros
Tribune has really turned around as an organization and is leading the media industry.
Forward thinking technology organization
Management listens to employees and understands what it takes to make a media business thrive
Cons
Difficult to work while in bankruptcy
Hours often long as cutbacks are made
Too much midlevel management in a number of areas
Advice to Senior Management
Take advantage of the strong position you have made and move forward
Instead of cutting workers, cut out middle management
Continue to listen to succeed.
Pros
Casual Environment
Fun People
They appear to promote from within.
Cons
Lots of Cold Calling
Customer relationships not heavily valued
Lot of experimenting, management goes with their gut--way too much here.
Very high turnover.
Advice to Senior Management
not applicable
Pros
everyone know the tribune paper
Cons
they cover everything but nothing good
Advice to Senior Management
listen to the employees and stand up for them when right
Pros
They have cutting edge technology. The work is new everyday, it is never boring. It is easy to stay on the cutting edge of one's profession.
Cons
Management is sometimes disparaging of employees. Communication from upper management usually seems fake, contrived, and patronizing. It seems sometimes that employees are assumed to be stupid.
Advice to Senior Management
Treat the employees with more respect. Don't tolerate incompetence, reward initiative and merit. Limit the influence of company politics. Communicate clearly and honestly with employees.
Pros
Freedom of Sales
Interacting with diverse business
Cons
Limited inventory to Sell.
DVR is causing less viewership of commercials
Ratings system is outdated
Advice to Senior Management
Stand up against Neilsen! Change pay structure to more of a salary/commision split instead of 100% salary
